no noe says you have to compete in concourse but, the boat still needs to look like the real thing. so you really should make it as scale as you can with the basics, drivers, exhaust, windsheild, proper decals tail feathers, canards etcs.. does it mean you have to have mirrors and gauges and stuff like that no.

but, don't throw in a plain boat that is scale in size and shape and expect to run it.

pacific grapics sells decal kits from 100 to 200.. not that bad considering

I will say this again.. this is a SCALE class not a sport class.. The Rules I am working on will be SCALE rules.. No ones is saying you can't submit your own version to make it a sport class. and as such they will require more work to make them look like the real thing. Thats the point of 1/8th scale hydro.

I and others don't want to see boats that just have hardware on them with some joe blow stickers on it..

if you want to race and build a boat for 1/8th scale make sure it looks like the real thing to the best of your ability.. I would hate for someone to build a sport boat and then not be able to race it.

exactly.. most of the guys building these boats want to race scale boats vs. scale boats.. not scale boats vs. T sport hydro.

Hey Guys,

Paul brought up a good point when he said close enough. When is close enough not close enough.
My take on close enough. At 10 feet the boat looks like it's full size counterpart. When you look at my Atlas you know that's what it is, there really is no question as to what boat it's modeled after. I've never heard anyone say "hey, that colors not right" or "doesn't look like the real thing to me". Personal opinion, if anyone put the time and effort to build an 1/8th scale, paint and decal it to the best of their ability and get it as close as possible, I would call it good.

I've seen some beautiful 1/8th scales and I've seen some rats, all where running at races without being DQ'ed because they weren't concourse material.

Paul.

but, right now there is nothing to stop the rats from running since there are no rules for 1/8 Yet.

it pauls boat legal. .In my opinion yes. but, I would say pauls boat is the min that is required

PLEASE We don't want someone bringing in a NEW Aeromarine Thunderbolt painted like a Bud and trying to pass it for 1/8 SCALE. This should be a Semi Scale(within reason) Class. Where the boats look as close to the real boat as possible. Down to the type of driver orientation and paint scheme.

So we need some basic rules that keep the playing field open but lets be careful not to rule out the non-detail freaks that want to enjoy the class also.

Take the ProBoat Bud & Lumar 1/8th would those be legal? Great entry level hulls for the non detail oreinted racer. The nitro/gas guys won't allow shoes what if they came on the orig hull?

Kelly i didn't hear from you over the weekend.Wow you and Terry not seeing Eye to Eye on something. Hmmmm does this mean you guys are breaking up? LOL

This is crazy, do the obvious. Adopt the exact E-RCU 1/10th scale rules, nation-wide, and go with a proven winner.

This class is perfect. It is not the huge investment of 8th scale with unlimited motors running on more than 30 cells. The hulls are big enough to get everyone’s attention and handle bumpy race water. They can be run on courses that range from smaller than the current 10th mile electric, to the larger nitro ovals. These boats perform very well on 12 to 14 cells a $125 Astro motor and one of Andy’s controllers. This is truly more bang for your buck than any other form of model boat racing anywhere.

From the shore, you can’t tell the difference between 10th and 8th.

I thought there was not enough variety in this thread. It needed just a bit of stirring :) .

With respect to Garry:

If those are the same rules I have read b4....they are a bit tight. not That I don't want to have a Scale class...but I don't think that Pauls boat would comply entirely with those rules but I think his hull is good enough to be able to run. As Kelly stated that would be an example of the bare min.

Also the size of the hull 1/8th and the size of cells and motor is what really intrigues me. If I were to build one it would have to have the big hp and V's.

I would like to race it but not cry like a baby if it got dinged.

I cant take this anymore. I have to jump in with my two cents worth. Quit worrying about the little stuff. Listen to what Kelly, Dennis and Paul have to say. 1/8 scale is not for everybody. I have been doing it in nitro for 38 years. I love the scale boats. And now I am excited about going electric. It has created a whole new challenge for me. Right now I am trying to get my 2004 Miss Budweiser changed over to electric. Even though I didnt do that well at the Nats it was still a hoot to run with other FE boats.

What you should do is get a set of rules in the book now so that when someone decides to build it wont be that hard to conform. All you need to do is modify the motor rule and power source. Also what you should do is contact Joe Weibelhaus there in Detroit. He has been running scale for a long time and has great looking boats. He could answer any questions you might have.

Not all boats have to be show quality. And they wont be. We all have different abilities when it comes to building. As long as a guy gives it his best effort that is all you can ask for. Once you get going and see what your fellow boater is capable of doing you try to out do him. These boats can be great ego builders.

In case you are not aware of it I have plans and paint schemes for virtually every Unlimited from the Slo-mo's to todays boats. I have been working with Mike Gossler with the decals so they are as correct as possible. If you ever need a paint code please ask. I can even get the correct paint code for the AVL. Sorry Paul!!

I have been talking with my guys here in Seattle. We are going to have a meeting after the season ends. Right now I can see at least a dozen 1/8 scales coming out for next season. And you are going to love this. One of the first rules we will talk about is turning left. Thats right. No, I mean left!! We are already doing it in 1/10 scale and when we ran the big 1/6 scales that is how we turned. If I come back to see you guys next year my boat will be set up to turn either way.

I will be in Detroit next month for the Gold Cup. Come on down and see me so we can talk some more. I should be able to round up some passes.

My feelings exactly!

See you at the Gold Cup! We go every year. :D

I would say thats right on as long as your abilities meet the min required

Roger,

Don't be put off by us FE turds. We LOVE to debate/bicker/argue but on race day it's a collective group hug. Most of the time at least

I can be persuaded. We do have sport hydro. If we had a "scale" hydro option we could drop the word scale from all the sport classes without anyone having a coronary. Then maybe the sport guys (some) would loosen up a stitch.

Hey, I just thought of this. You know what would be awesome is if Roger's plans came with Vinyl material codes too. There are a bunch of us with vinyl machines now but try to get the vinyl to match HOK Pearl Violet. Yikes. Most of us buy from a catalog or on line. Matching colors is a bugger.

Sorry, another tangent.

What would really be awesome would be glass versions of all of Roger's plans.

Kelly, I stand by the Committee thing. If someone from our district is put on an FE scale committee, they'd simply be rubber stampers anyway. Put together a committee that currently has some interest.

Doug I expect you to stick to the committe.. where is the survey?

LOL

My point is if every district has a scale chairmen then you have a committe already.
