Because it's a paid position...

A few thoughts about a good secretary.

After just a few years ones likely to burn out.. even a good secretary. Then what?

I can only imagine that after a few years of doing that position that one would likely be done model boating for good.. Even a good secretary. Then what?

If you can think of anybody that would be good at this (I like Noel and she is really quite good at it.. you have to be a member of the IMPBA directors to really get it) get ready to wish them well in there new found hobby of swinging form the money bars at the local park as they will likely not be boating after this stint.

I think one of the most resent profound happenings in my life was my 16 year old daughter getting her driving license. Teaching her to drive with idiots out on the street was quite the experience.. Some of you have been there.. Some of us are the idiots i speak of... me too...( I had to swallow this one.. heck im about the best driver in the world, arnt I?)

Get that rust bucket out of my way for gods sake..

Get over in your own lane you ( )..Insert language that you used this morning on your way to work

Not knowing who you are dealing with and there level of experience does not make you (or me) an expert at how to get things done.. If you dont know why this person is sitting at the stop sign and waiting just a little longer then you might for the approaching car does not make you an expert as to when to pullout.

Bottom line.. The IMPBA secretary position is a tall glass to fill. You have to be ready for people that are competition minded and you better be ready to take some crap. I for one am glad for anybody that steps up to the plate (thank you Noel) to take on this task. Besides I don’t see a line of people waiting to get in to do this job.

One more note: If there is a problem in IMPBA..and im not sure that the fires we say we have, are burning out of control.. its not the Secratary...

I found out like many at the Internats that Pat had decided not to run again and after being approached by members from Canada, TX, FL, IL, MO, TN, IN, and AL and seeing that all of them would support my decision to run again I started my campaign. I know there are a number of problems that have to get solved befor ethe membership is satisfied with the organization and I plan on accomplishing at least 3 items that keep coming back to bite the district directors.

1. Late delivery of the Roostertail.

2. Non-delivery of Membership cards.

3. Non delivery of Rulebooks to new members.

I know there are other problems but these are the main 3 that keep going on for years.

I have been a District Director since 1996 in Distrct 4 and then in 1997 my job got moved to Huntsville, AL where I was asked by President Dick Tyndall to take the position of District Five Director and this is my 3rd term in that position. If elected for this position I plan on working with the IMPBA board to solve the recurring problems the organization has. We have a good group of Directors on the IMPBA board now, and we just need to focus on the promotion and betterment of the hobby.

Ron, you have started to talk about thing that only a few people know. And YES, I agree with you 100%. Mrs Tyndall was in deed the best the organization has EVER seem at that Position. As i said in another post I belive IMPBA problems started with the Jones administration.

The rule on the noise issue 'TO ME" was motivated buy what was thought to be financial gain. The belief that everyone would run out an buy a "certain" pipe. That did not happen. Secondly the method in which the rule came about was underhanded as well. And at the EXACT same time Dist 3 moved to NAMBA.

The fix is going to long and hard. But, But possible. I think that vision is going to have to be introduced in the direction that IMPBA is going. The noise issue is NOT the only facter behind ponds being lost. Eric Canto in another post is correct.

Those that have be comming to Atlanta for the last few years can clearly see the SIGNS of PROGRESS. And that lake is PRIME WATER FRONT PROPERTY. There is no amount of friendship when a develpoer is talking BIG $$$$. Sure being able to tell some one that we meet a specific standard on noise is godd. But when it makes no difference, we loss. there is not a single person that can say that the area around them has not changed in the last three years. Yet the change in IMPBA has not be developmently or good. Yet everylast IMPBA member can clearly see the ADVANCES that NAMBA has made.

Some thing as important as the Internats and who will host the Internats goes through a procees equal to going to the dentist for root canal. I would have thought that a simple solutation to the host for the internats would be that each District take a year and that when the board meeting is held that people that have plans for which year start work and give progress on it. This way no one club is BURDENED with that load. Unles of cousre GREED IS GOOD.

Again, Brain or Bill how you vote is up to you. I will say. If Pat wants back in IF WE WRITE IN. HE SHUOLD HAVE SEEM TO IT THAT THE ROOSTERTAILS

CAME OUT ON TIME. IF NO OTHER TIME!!!

Grim, I dont want to beat on anyone but I have a very strong case that the office is not running properly I.E.: I myself have emailed the IMPBA Secretary at least 5 times in the past year with no answer what so ever, it would make you wonder if there is a secretary at all and then with everyone stating they have no rule books, newsletters and membership cards is there anyone else who is to blame for this?. If I am wrong as to who is responsible for this then please fill me in! Just remember I have worked very close with many of the IMPBA's secretaries including the best we ever had so I am pretty sure I know what the job title includes. As a matter of fact I nearly took on the job myself when Priscilla stepped down. I was secretary/treasurer/points keeper of District 3 for many years and I made sure the job was done properly and in a timely fashion providing I had the support of the district and when that support failed in 1999 itself I stepped down as well.

If the current secretary is having support problems than maybe she should step down as well, its very hard to be secretary for someone who does not give you the required support to do your job.

(1) There are problems in the IMPBA even if you cant see them, maybe I can because I am technically on the outside being that I am in a NAMBA District that used to be and IMPBA District. But as I said before there are some problems in NAMBA as well.

(2) The noise issue is one that should be dead and all should be QUITE about it. Mufflers will not slow you down. Set a limit for people to meet and hope that it is low enough that the local authorities to each club will be ok with or mandate one lower and annouce it in your race flyers.

For the most part the organization can function and we can race our boats as long as the membership gets its membership cards, rule books, club sanctions and insurance certificates.

Wow chuck.. you have the right to speculate but i have to tell you that this is about as far from the intent as you can get.

Im a firm believer that the hobby will never grow or get much bigger with out MFG support.. when i tried to ask the board to consider the possibility of placing the muffler issue in the hands of the MFgs.. the idea..,,,, just the idea of this,,,,, was Poo Pooed by the board members.. i can accept this.. its how democracy works.

Im not saying that this would have been the cure all to the nose issue but it would have clearly came from people in the know and you would not have had the rubber ding dongs and clever do dads on the back of the pipes.

As it goes I heard things like why stifle the guys from designing there own.. Why I thought? Because now you are saying we must have “it”… and you don’t have a clue what “it” is.. Let the creative minds of the MFGs design them and hell make money too.. god for bid the guys that have spent every waking moment and last dollar to offer you products that win races make a few bucks… did I just go off….hehehe  :D

Its not hard to say you need to have muffler numbers 3205 or 3650 on your boat.. but to say you need to have a muffling devise… I questioned that too.. all in all I feel we are on the right path now and its time to play boats.

I agree with Grim about Noel doing the job she is capable of doing a good job she has the skills but for some reason the items mentioned just are not up to the standards they should be. As for Noel responding to inquiries from members, the members have got to go to thier Directors first Noel does not have the time to respond to 30 or more inquiries everyday, if she did she would never get any work done. I explained to her all of the downfalls of the job the irrate members, late night calls, ect. so she went into job with some of the information the past secretarys didn't have. I plan on working with her and the board to get the problems solved and back to a standard the membership deserves.

This thread is not what I intended it to be...

I am not trying to sensor your posts, that's not my intent either...only let's try to get back to the topic at hand...

Potential IMPBA president candidates

I have seen three names on this thread...

Granted, this is a write in campaign, so you can write in (any IMPBA) member you wish...post that name here too, and why you think they'd make a good president...

I would like to hear from those how they will fix what they see as being broken...Bill somewhat touched on the three things he found most troubling...Brian addressed that he will work hard on similar issues...and I have not seen Pat post here...

We have just over two weeks until ballots need to be in...

Keep the noise and roostertail discussion to a different thread please...

Thanks

Garrett

What about getting the insurance certificates out in time for the races? They need to be mailed to the club officer(s) not the land holder. Getting the insurance certificate 1 week before the race is scheduled won't work next year.

Sorry, this sounds like a political forum and I couldn't help myself. ;)

I know this is a thread about presidential candidates but the secretary is APPOINTED by the president so this is relevant. While I'm sure that Noel is doing the best she can but I'm beginning to think the position is overwelming her, as it did others before her. I too remember when Priscilla was our secretary &, like Ron said previously, she was absolutely awesome. There were no issues with insurance papers, race sanctions, membership cards, returned e-mails or phone calls. Priscilla committed 100% to the job & I think the problem we have now is there are those who've tried to do this job along with other things like going to college, another job, raising very young kids, etc. This is a PAID position & requires 100% FULL time commitment. Whoever winds up as our next prez needs to seriously think about this.

If it were me I'd beg Pris to do it again......... B)

Here, Here!! on that one. Mrs. T did a great job. And Randell, all of the thread is about the next President. As these thing in SPECIFIC he WILL FACE,HAVE to ADDRESS, and FIND A SOLUTATION TO.

There is one more debate to go. Kerry or Bush. Same thing here. All we are doing is talking about the issue that we feel need to be talked about. Each candidate is on this borad and can offer their individual answer how they intend to effectively

fix, deal,solve the current situtations.

I know that Don, Ron,myself and yourself remember not to long ago the we were sailing along at a Quite pace. Well the ship is listing for having run aground. And people are jumping out and swiming to safety. Exxon Valdez was a mess but it got cleaned up. Long term effects. But cleaned up just the same.

Grim, I make that statement about the pipe thing only becasue of a conversation that I heard BETWEEN certain people and the resulting Explosion that is still sending out shock waves.

Ron I think it was the last time you were in Atlanta

to the Spring Nats. Can you remember the Quite pipe issue at that race?

Now, A Qusetion for both gentlemen runnning for office. We have seen a decline in memebers and races. What will you do to reverse this trend?

Good question, I will not pretend that I have the magic answer to this question. The IMPBA has started to look into ways to get the member numbers up. I agree that better service would do a bunch to help that. Now by better service I do not want to imply that the secretary is in any way doing a bad job. She is in fact doing a very good job. What I am talking about here in regard to service is communication. One thing that I have done and will continue to do is improve communication between the IMPBA officers and the members.

I think there are issues with things not getting to where they are supposed to go. To this I would ask that all members who have not received a current roostertail E-mail me and give me your member number and name. In the Subject line please put “Roostertail Issue” so I do not delete your email as Spam.

If you have not received a membership card and/or your check has not been cashed please e-mail me the same information putting “Membership issue” in the subject line of the e-mail.

I will look into this issue now because waiting until after the election is not good enough. As the IMPBA Vice President I will start this process now.

I will also “if the forum moderators allow it” post updates on the progress of these two issues.

As far as new member goes Pat put together a small group to look into novice class issues with the possibility of making the class a reality. Randall Thomas, John Equi and myself are on the committee. Our work will start in Ernest this fall. All of the district directors where given a list of Former IMPBA members so that they can contact some of these missing members and make sure they know we are still racing boats. I have netted two former boaters so far by using this list.

So enough rambling, If elected to the office of president I will continue to work on these and the many other issues that we have.

Thank you

Brian Nelsen

IMPBA Vice President

Well based on this post & the fact Brian took the time to answer a question I privately e-mailed to both candidates, looks like Brian is getting my write in vote. :)

Don in answer to your question about failing membership. I will be looking at ways to get the Scale Electric boaters back into IMPBA , they already use our rules for their competition. After looking that the risk factor for Scale Electric Modelers I think if we can come up with a reduced membership fee for them that may work. I agree with Brian also on the better service from the board mainly the Directors response time to the membership, osme of the Directors very seldom write articals for the Roostertail and do not follow up on request from thier members. I would also like to get the IMPBA Fast Electric Director more involved in trying to recover the fast electric membership. It looks pretty bad when they hold a national event right in our own back yard Batavia which is in District Four, and IMPBA doesn't even have 1 registered Fast Electric Club. I have passed around the past membership list that Noel had sent to the directors to all of my clubs and even my old club up in STL to try and get old members back in Model Boating. One of the things I have done locally here in Huntsville is to have a permanent Pubilc Relations officer for our club his responsibility is to ensure we get news coverage for all of our events to bring spectators which is where clubs can get new members. Hope this help win your support.

Mrs Tyndall was in deed the best the organization has EVER seem at that Position.
An excellent example that the job can be done.

I'll throw you guys another bone in the direction of reform. I have a SAW trials October 23 & 24. Monday night (Oct 18) I have a message on my machine stating that the equipment was sent that day to "X" address. I have not lived at that address for two years and have had time trials every year. You see my situation? I can almost bet who will have to make a 2+ hour round trip to correct this.

Preston,

Give me your correct address and I will make sure it gets to Glen so he can inform the Records trial equipment Depots of the correct address. Glen just took over this job and so far he is doning a good job but it will take him a bit to get everything working correctly. We had to have an overnight delivery ($70 +) of the console for our records trial due to a failure of the console for our last Trials. Hopefully Equi has gotten the problem fixed. It was almost a disaster. Again get me your address that you want the equipment sent to. I know in the past it had been sent to Mike Salleby's place if I am not mistaken. I know it's too late for this event but we can get it fixed fo rthe next one.
