I think the rule is very confusion but yes it is better than nothing. I believe that Zuber gave the reason the BOD gave for leaving the muffler rule. ie. "Well guys if we leave the mufflers most boats will be below 95dB and if we remove the muffler rule, the contestants will push it right to 95dB". You have commented very little on the worst part of the rule. Measured 50 to 150' :( Do the people who put this in understand dB. I believe the rule is every time you double the distance the dB goes down 6dB. So 100dB at 50' will be 94dB at 100'. Again, it is better than nothing. ;)

Preston, I'm not going to hammer you, just the opposite. Yeah, we're pissin' and moanin' again about the noise issue yet you and I plus many others have seen safety violations galore at races. What are you or can you do about them? Refuse to race after driving 150 miles to the race? How many times have we seen clubs fail to set up safety netting properly? Ever seen a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher or like you mentioned, a prop guard on boat stands and not said a word? How many 'riggers do we see without launch handles on them? Yeah, a bunch!

The noise issue is just one item that needs to be seriously addressed.

The launch handle rule is about as bad of a rule as they come. It's an unsafe safety rule if you think of it. It puts your hand closer to the prop. I'd rather grab the side of the boat.

Years ago when **** Tyndall was the President, I was launching his Mongoose usig the throw handle that was mounted per the rule. As I released the boat, the prop cut threw 2 of my fingers. After several stitches, **** never asked me to use the handle again.

Which is exactly why I no longer run them.

I think it has been but yet there are now 5 pages of poo.

Refuse to race after driving 150 miles to the race?
If this happens then somebody didn't call ahead to see if they could just meet the 95db rule only. And if you aren't allowed at 95db only then somebody is being a butt-head. You come to my race and I don't care if your have a megaphone as long as it's under 95.

Launch handle...............seems everyone agrees. Well just treat this noise stuff the same and do the right thing.

I had one butthole in the club that actually wanted "no swimming" signs. Nevermind that while he was Pres. there was no such thing. I gave him the job of posting them.

Even though you would think that common sense would dictate that no swimming be allowed while running boats, the rule book and the safety procedures REQUIRES the posting. Good delegation Mr President.

Shoot! This died off to quick. :D

Anyway, while at the IMPBA site I saw the launch handle safety regulation.

All inboard hydros should have throwing handles

Doesn't say where or what it has to look like.

Now, we all agree on common sense. So why do you mount the handle where you'll get your fingers cut off? :p  :p

"Throwing handles?" Wouldn't that be the side of the tub? :p

Funny how all my launch handles look like little winglets glued on the sides of the tub on the rear.... :p

You'd have to ask Mr. Tyndal that one. All of my boats have them built into the boat. I call it the tub.

Bill Zuber and I talked about this and a few other things one night in a chat room. Someone could mess with the rules a little if they wanted to. "That's not a wing, it's a launch handle!" ;)

Most manufactured launch handles are way too low and I can see how launchers could easily get something hung up near a prop or rudder trying to use one. Vague rules can lead to injury or cheating.

The operative word there is "should"...

So what about Sport 40's, Gas Sport Hydros, Catamarans? They're all hydros. Should they have launch handles?
