There is nothing like twins in more ways than oneI think having a class just for the singles is great. There is an abundance of twins out there to fill there own class, and now there will be enough singles to run in there own. But when there is not enough twins and singles to run there own class's at a high points race, then we could run the singles with the twins. Hey the more classes the better. Also singles are a little easier on the wallet then a twin, but come with the same speed and sometimes more.
Hi Jim,Mike, I was at that Mini Gold Cup with my father entered in F hydro. He drove a red Gator to 3rd place. I still have the program from that race. I believe it was 1982. John Jr. couldn't hold his emotions as he screamed the "Lager Head" across the finish line. I have it marked down that both he and Bob Finley tied with 1100 pts. So he must have defeated Bob in a run off. That is a cool story but also a shame that it seems we have abandoned the history and legacy part of this hobby. Bridge senior is one of he reasons I got into this little hobby.. Was it Tim Reis, Ron Walker and Bridge Sr. who were the "Special Brew Racing Crew"?Again Doc, the John Bridge trophy is for the BEST PERFORMING TWIN in F CLASS. As it appears in our IMPBA rulebook-Don, Its the WATER issue. The Bridge award can be given for the best twin in the Twin class. I was racing when John Bridge was running. During that time and really up to about the last 5-7 years twins would not finish and there were vary few of them and the award help stimulate growth of twins. NOW with 5 twins and one single F-hydro in the same race the single has no chance due to the WATER. BTW there has not been a Nats for about 5 yrs so I not sure about the significance of the argument that has been presented. Also I think there are several folks who can afford a single f and not a twin. Doc
John Bridge Trophy
Trophy to be awarded to the individual having the best total score with a multi-engine Hydro in F
class, US-1 competition (1/16 mile Straightaway and Oval time trials, and heat racing). This would
be a traveling trophy.
So do you want to re-write that part of the rulebook as well? And "up to about the last 5-7 years twins would not finish". Seriously? Wow, that really makes me wish I could have gone to the Nats for the 10 year stretch I missed starting in 2000 as my twins didn't seem to have that "problem". And lastly to imply that the water doesn't get screwed up with only single F boats running is a bit of a stretch. I've run F class for many years and a full heat of singles does a pretty good job shredding the water. Here's a thought- instead of expending the energy trying to convince us to change the rules for a class that works just fine, why don't you use it more productively by encouraging the larger race events to offer the single F specialty class like Charleston has done. Or you could just run E hydro which is just as fast and no twins! There ya go, like Julian said PROBLEM SOLVED! LOL!!!
All,
Here is an update regarding the John Bridge trophy.
For those not familiar with history of the trophy, It was made in honor of John Bridge following his death in the early 1980's (I do not have the exact year in front of me). It was hand made by Tim Ries, who was the original founder of crapshooter boats. For those that have not seen it, it is probably one of the nicest trophies made and was a miniature replica of John's twin. It was to be given out at the Mini Gold Cup in Detroit yearly in memory of John. John Bridge Jr. was the first winner of the trophy and I do not believe he has raced boats since. After quite a few years, the participation in the Detroit area for F-hydro was very low, and Jerry Betke went to IMPBA to get the trophy made into the perpetual trophy that is described in this post. The agreement at the time was that if interest in the trophy ever declined, that it would be returned to the Oakland Wolverine club.
Last year, Jerry inquired as to the whereabouts of the trophy. The winner had not been reported for some time in any internats results, probably due to the low turnouts the last few years. After a lot of research and help from IMPBA board members, the trophy was located. It was stuffed in the corner of somebody's trailer in very poor condition and it had not been updated with the winners names engraved in quite a few years. With approval from the IMPBA President the trophy was returned to Jerry. He has since restored the trophy to its original condition.
Last spring, John Bridge Jr. was contacted by Jerry. At our club meeting, we presented the trophy back to him and he now has it in his posession. John Jr. was very appreciative of receiving this award back. When he came to our meeting, he brought many old magazine articles regarding his dads accomplishments through the years. You could see by the emotion in his face and by the way that he talked about their days of racing together how much getting this trophy back meant to him. It was definately the right thing to do and is now back where it belongs.
It was a great race with alot of tough competition. Bridge, Ries & Walker were the Brew Crew and had matching geared twins. Fun days they were. If the trophy is still with John Jr. that suits me fine as in my heart .... that's where it belongs.
And we froze our balls off."AS JOE HAS SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN " A SINGLE F-HYDRO CAN'T COMPETE WITH A TWIN"."
First off I think the new TWIN class is great...but no need to change F hydro!
Until 3 weeks ago I had not raced in almost 7 years. That race 7 years ago was the 2005 Atlanta Spring Nats. I ran a Mac 84 in a 67 SGX. I arrived at the race about 11 AM and missed the first round completly. Even so, I tied for 1st place in F hydro with that litle boat running against the BIG singles and Twins.
No need to change F-hydro. The added twin class is Great. If clubs want to seperate singles and twins that is fine too as long as it's on the race flyer.
And speaking of big singles....been thinking of putting some glow plugs and a little nitro in a Zenoah! (Single engine Twin Killer!)
