I have a 75HP 1994 Mercury outboard and It keeps taking the rectifier out the tack goes first then the charging in system this has happened for the 3rd time in two years, any suggestions???

Thanks

Walt , i'll check into it for you , some great Mercury techs around here . You might send Mike Culhane a pm also he is a very experienced Merc Tech .

Mostly on older (than yours) merc V-6's, but i've replaced a lot of stators for those kinds of issues.

Robin,

Is there a grounging problem with the stators and this is causing the rectifier problem??

Thanks

No walt, it's internal to the stator itself. the engines were mostly mid '80's, but the stators failed repeatedly after being replaced with factory stators. this was in the early & mid '90's, at the time my local dealership wouldn't sell mercury stators, they would order aftermarket ones from a company called sierra. apparently the epoxy that the windings were potted in wasn't dielectric enough. windings would "cross talk" & produce frequencies never intended by the engineers...........

Robin,

Is there and electricl test that I can do on the stator, or is it intermittent??

Thanks

Let me dig out my service manuals this weekend, walt. does the tach read the wrong rpm, or just quit? the issue i'm remembering started with flakey tach readings.

Walt to test a stator you need a meter that will read Hz.

You need to run the eng and hook up the meter to the output leads from the stator.

Isolate the leads from every thing else and see if it is stable at a steady RPM.

Change the RPM to different speed and see if the HZ clime and stabilize at the higher RPM.

Can't argue with foley's logic! i used to change them like the gas guys replace carb diaphragms...........
