Alright guys here it is, a Orlic .12 boat!! I have learned a lot so far and waiting on some parts to get the rest done. I had Mike Walker build my first set of sponsons for me and the boat is setup with the JAE footprint minus the ski. If it don't work I will switch the ski to the JAE one.

It looks like it is going to come in right around 2lbs race ready, Lighter if I go with hollow booms and smaller steering servo and find a smaller battery and go back to the wire drive setup. Then I could probably save 2 or more ounces!

I do have a couple question so stay tuned if you will!!

A special thanks to all who have helped so far!!! Mike W. Glenn Q. Mark S. Larry C. Martin T. Rodney P. Greg and Bob B and Frank Orlic for a awesome tub!!!

Thanks Terry and Jose! Just waiting on some servos and figuring out what and how I will mount them. Then the motor and stuffing tube and some more parts, like a SPP pipe! MMMM more carbon fiber!

Since I will not be running the water cooling what do I do with the hole in the rudder? Turn it into a squirt gun  Is there a way to block it but not permanent?

Thanks Guys.

You can just screw in a 10/32 or 8/32 into it depending on what fitting it is . I dont even bother with mine. It just pumps up a stream behind the boat.

Kevin, for your servo mounts, take 3 or 4 layers of 6 oz fiberglass cloth, lay them in a criss cross pattern so the weave is going across each other, not with each other; then clamp it in between two pieces of alum angle. Makes a nice light weight mount for mini servo's for throttle and third channel. For the rudder, just use wood blocks.

I just use standard 30 minute epoxy for this, and dont forget the wax paper or you will never get the alum angle off without damaging the mount ;)

shame its a .12 because a have a spare spp nr pipe but its for a .21

boat looks great kevin
Martin beat me to the 21 Orlic tub! I do how ever have a 21 in the plans for the year! I currently have all my money focused on this 12 boat at the moment though, otherwise I would be all over it.

I decided last night and I have a sample pack of Carbon fiber coming for this!!!

Looks great, Kevin. Good luck with it. If I were you, I would do my sponsons in a highly visible color. With the black tub, it will be difficult to see when you are racing. .12s being as small as they are, are the hardest to see, especially when they die in the in the corners.

Thanks Marty,,, I plan on a gloss white or a white pearl for the sponsons and cowl!!! I might develope a paint program for my other boats that same way!!! I really like how visible my white tunnel is in the water!

Thanks Butch, I hope you get to see it run also!! Cause that means it is done!!!! Uncle Sam and the IRS said lots of parts should be showing up soon!!!

Finally starting to get this little gem going again and have a few questions.

I purchased a turnfin from David Preusse and have to sharpen it. Now with the JAE do you guys sharpen the fin both sides all the way down or just before the bend, and then just sharpen the outside or edge towards the bouys?

Also what will I notice with the fin more forward or back?

Next would be Center of gravity. All though its not supposed to be a major deal with the JAE what should I shoot for on my JAE setup Orlic tub?

Thanks Guys!!!

Kevin,

I am no rigger expert by any means, (I have the first two riggers I have ever owned in my shop being finished as we speak), or imagination, but you should always only sharpen the outside edge of a mid-hull mounted turn fin on any hydro.

Kevin, should have paid the little bit extra and got the fin sharpened by DP. And he actually sharpens BOTH sides of the fin. Best TF in the biz for the JAE

Interesting Rodney. I have a sharpened fin coming from him and I did not know that. Sharpening both sides typically does not work. Can't wait to bolt his on and see what happens. Dick Tyndall makes great fins as well.

Thanks guys, I asked as in the sharpening instructions David says to sharpen both sides down to the bend and then just the leading edge. Rodney I thought about that but figured I would try and sharpen myself to learn and involve myself more in the build and maybe develop some new skills!

Starting to get excited as Glenn is working on the new hotrod 12 for me!!!
