Just got back from Red Glare in eastern Maryland. What a great weekend. I'm exhausted. LOL Saw lot's of M's light up yesterday. So many people flying, sometimes you had to wait over 30 minutes to launch but it was all good. MDRA did a great job keeping things moving.
Two successful dual deploy launches in the Dark Star on 6 grain 38mm J motors. The winds on both days were causing the rockets to cock over the crowd and frankly that scared the heck out of me. But deployments on both flight went very well resulting in short walks. Though today the Darkstar landed 50 feet from my trailer and the strong winds kept the chute inflated, dragging the rocket about 100 yards before I could recover it. I flew my Minie Magg yesterday on a 2 grain 38 I motor for a short flight up to 1300 feet. The fins I glassed are holding up fine so far but after my flight yesterday I ended up with a hole burned through my aluminum motor case right by the nozzle. I'm pretty sure the problem had to do with surface of the motor tube where the motor collar contacts it not being perfectly flat. The nozzle might of cocked a bit on boost causing a leak. Oh well. Lesson learned.
All in all a good weekend. My sister and her family came down today so I did two low power launches with the kids. Six launches for the weekend all with good ignitions and chute deployments. My buddy shot a minimum diameter L motor well over 10,000 feet. We put a non pyrotechnic smoke grenade in it and it worked out very well. We were able to visually track the rocket all the way down. The bad news it it ended up in a tree a mile and a half away so he is going to have to spring for a tree climber to get it back....
Rocket season is now over for me for a while. Time to get back into gear with the boats and let the farmers plant their crops.Tthe Darkstar is begging me to take out that 38mm adapter and put some 54mm hardware in her so I'll be collecting some gear over the summer. I accomplished allot in a couple months and learned allot. Looking forward to getting more experience this fall.
