Okay Grim, what's the best way to install some weight into that big fat nose cone?? I don't see myself putting anything bigger than a I motor in her.

Chilli.

here is what I do... you can go to thrust curve to get motor weight.. Lets pick an I 357.. (343grams). stick that weight in the back of the rocket and then check CG.

Tape some weight to the NC near the front to conclude your CG. Stick some sand paper on the end of a dowel and do your best to roughen up the inside tip of the nose cone. I then poor in BBs and epoxy of that weight into the nose cone.... I also place the tip of the nose cone in a bucket of water when I poor the epoxy so I don’t over heat the plastic from the epoxy cure. IF.. the weight comes loose after its in place use Shoe Goo to re attach it.

Some cross drill dowels at the tip before pouring tin the epoxy but I don’t want to have to try to figure out how to finish and paint that.

Thanks Grim. Worked out like a charm. Wrapped some 80 grit on a dowel and roughened her up pretty good. I'm using some slow cure epoxy so she is staying pretty cool.

I'm a fan off Shoe Goo but I also like 3M 5200...if I have a month to let it cure. LOL

I've heard of the cross drilling thing but didn't care for that option either.

I got my Tripoli L2 cert last weekend on the Minie Magg. I put allot of weight in the nose and she flew straight as an arrow up to 3300 feet on a baby J. My club hosted Battle of the Rockets which is a competition for high schools and colleges. We had a nice turn out at it was cool to see the kids having fun. Heading east to Red Glare this weekend in Delaware. Will get to meet the Wildman in person. LOL My friend purchased a Wildman Ultimate from him a few weeks ago and we'll be putting it together over the summer. After this weekend I'll be back to boating mode until the fall.

Chilli.. so you know Wildman is an old RC boat racer from our district.

Congrats on your L2 and have fun at redglare.

Grim.

BTY.. I shreded the bardahl on a J570 this last weekend...lol TOAST!

I remember now you mentioning that on this thread. Will ask him about it this weekend.

Sorry about the Bardahl. I had a bit of a hard landing on the Magg. The glass laminated fin held up but cracked the filet. I repaired it and glassed in a strip of 2 inch cloth down the filet. If it happens again I might just build a custom fiberglass 8" Maxie Magg.

Just becuse.. ROCKETS ROCK!

Your making me wanna fly Bad - That was a GREAT day with perfect weather. The Argent has about 8 flights on it now Grim, all on G40-9W -

Its very happy on that motor and is still - recoverable

Great times Andy! Love to see joy!

Here is the Bardahl after the aft set of fins came off. The fins shredded at burn out. The rocket pitched about 30deg but managed 3804'. big zipper too.

The last rocket for me with phenolic tubing.. when they are gone.. no more

Just got back from Red Glare in eastern Maryland. What a great weekend. I'm exhausted. LOL Saw lot's of M's light up yesterday. So many people flying, sometimes you had to wait over 30 minutes to launch but it was all good. MDRA did a great job keeping things moving.

Two successful dual deploy launches in the Dark Star on 6 grain 38mm J motors. The winds on both days were causing the rockets to cock over the crowd and frankly that scared the heck out of me. But deployments on both flight went very well resulting in short walks. Though today the Darkstar landed 50 feet from my trailer and the strong winds kept the chute inflated, dragging the rocket about 100 yards before I could recover it. I flew my Minie Magg yesterday on a 2 grain 38 I motor for a short flight up to 1300 feet. The fins I glassed are holding up fine so far but after my flight yesterday I ended up with a hole burned through my aluminum motor case right by the nozzle. I'm pretty sure the problem had to do with surface of the motor tube where the motor collar contacts it not being perfectly flat. The nozzle might of cocked a bit on boost causing a leak. Oh well. Lesson learned.

All in all a good weekend. My sister and her family came down today so I did two low power launches with the kids. Six launches for the weekend all with good ignitions and chute deployments. My buddy shot a minimum diameter L motor well over 10,000 feet. We put a non pyrotechnic smoke grenade in it and it worked out very well. We were able to visually track the rocket all the way down. The bad news it it ended up in a tree a mile and a half away so he is going to have to spring for a tree climber to get it back....

Rocket season is now over for me for a while. Time to get back into gear with the boats and let the farmers plant their crops.Tthe Darkstar is begging me to take out that 38mm adapter and put some 54mm hardware in her so I'll be collecting some gear over the summer. I accomplished allot in a couple months and learned allot. Looking forward to getting more experience this fall.

Great report.. glad all went well for you.. congrats on your flights.

aha.. the "bloomingdrag".. chute blooms and drags your rocket.. I hate that! Had the Chilli Pepper drug across a runway like that one time.. can you say.. MISSING PAINT!

Question for you guys. My buddy and I both shot Cesaroni 38mm 6 grain reds and ended up with melted liners which stuck to the aluminum motor casing. Is this typical for this formula?? What's the best way to get that melted plastic out of the tube??

Nope. I know people greased liners but thought that was for some of the bigger research loads. Didnt think it was necessary with the Cesaroni's. My buddy greased up his old Kosdon L motor this weekend but he doesnt do the Cesaroni's.
