from what I have researched the 603FF and the 603FS work with the FSM2.4 module. I believe the digital servos are only needed when in HRS mode, analog or digital can be used when in PPM mode. I am currently converting a 3PJ to 2.4, awaiting a NIB FSM2.4 module and some 603FF receivers. I hope I am right in using analog servos as I would not be able to afford replacing all my servos at the moment.
You are going to be fine with that setup. I ran a 3PJS for years on 2.4 module using 603FF and 603FS receivers. I finally switch over to the 4PKS that I am running now. All my receivers still work.

Mike,. Thank you , I'm feeling better about using the 603FF receivers now, but I will definitely add the 400mm antenna first

Joe, A few simple rules.

If you did not do it with MHZ dont do it with 2.4. Meaning.. If you did not lay the RX antenna horizontal i the boat with MHZ dont do it with 2.4 either. Just some basics like that.

Then.. a Diversity RX is ALWAYS best.. and they are readily available..

Futaba Marine team members recommend the use of a 400mm RX antenna. Can you get away with out it.. YES.. but, whatever the case. its best to get the end of the RX antenna as far up away from the water as you can.

Its best to use (as described in the manuals of the systems), genuine Futaba Electroncis with your Futaba radio systems.

Its best to use a RX battery that CAN deliver the amperage needed to get it all done. Having not used one.. It looks like Bill Brandt has a great option. MAKE SURE THE BATTERY IS 10C OR MORE! NICD,, sure.. NIMH.. eh.. i dont know.. not for me.. LiFe, great choice BUT.. it must be over 10C.. and LiPo.. s.......ure.. sometimes.. if you have the experience and understand what you are dealing with... then sure.

Grim,,I what size/brand nicd are 10C, my standard Futaba receiver packs dont give a C rating that I can see.

thats a LONG story on round cells.. 1.8 - 3.5 amps is the "Recommended" discharge rate for most Nicads but but as we know they can be used at MUCH higher rates. I have never used a Nicad that did not get the job done. Testing on labview back in the old Hobbico days proved that they were VERY robust. (just not "Green") so the push was to move away from them.

I just hate NiMH so we will blow past that.. (if you have NiMH the lower the MAH.. the better the battery)

LiFE is indeed the way to go.. just make sure you get a 10C pack.. as for LiPOs.. its not an issue.. they have much greater energy density.

Stupid question here....can the old futaba pcm 1024 transmitters be made to work on 2.4 with a module change and new receivers ?
Yes in some cases. I know the 3PJ, 3PK work by just a module change. Other than that not sure. The failsafe stops working when you do this thou. Jerry Dunlap had an electric boat drive to the boat of the lake.

The only ones that can be converted easily are the transmitters that used a module. Just switch the module. The 3PK and 3PKS are ones that uses replaceable module as well as a few others.

Other radios would need all new inards connected to the radios input pots.

A few a have done those full conversions.

Everything should stay the same within reason. I'm not sure what kind of system it would be for Futaba but it was pretty much plug and play for Airtronics. Unplug the old module, plug a new one in, plug in the new 2.4 receiver and you're good to go.

Check out Radio South in Brunswick GA.
Tony Stillman used to convert just about every type radio to 2.4. He was at AMA for years. I haven’t got current contact info but I think it’s still out there.
 
One thing about nimh batts. Mike Z is right about the lower the mah the better. One point is only AA size or larger I have seen many problems with 700mah AAA size batts dropping voltage under load
