Looking for options / ideas for mounting the forward area of the cowl on my Seaducer. Normally, this would not be an issue, but this particular boat has been hacked(underside deck lip removed) to house the Exxon Valdese of metal fuel tanks.

I was thinking about just staking the front with carbon tube or the good old popsicle sticks , but should I build something for them to stake into ?? The rear is just going to use the standard o-ring type strap and stud on either side. The motor is moved forward a tad so the inside edge of the cowl actually hooks over the head area pretty well.

And yes, plenty of floatation....... ;)

Andy...if the cowl is raised up, you could just use o-rings in the front as well. Mount them on the sides of deck and have them go at an angle to the cowl... that lets it pull it foward and down at the same time.

Thats how my ducer cat is setup.

i gotta agree with hacked as the proper terminology, drew. what did the guy use, a chainsaw   ? i'd put some dowels or rods on the cowl, & tubes for them to go into under the deck. that is, if you have room between the motor & cowl to make it work. tell sugar i'll see him in s.c. :D .

My works ugly Robin

but not THAT bad, it came that way. :p

Never bothered me until I decided to add the cowl

Not a bad thought on the tubes and dowels but may be a PITA to line up esp with the little distance between the head and deck- the male side would have to be short and the female side pretty large- but your well aware of that game eh ?

Kidding , but I wasn't gonna let Rick or Ray take that one after I realized how it sounded..... :p :p :p

Maybe a combination of just dowels to hook under the deck and the rubber o-rings in the front also would work okay ??

My pitmans gonna LOVE ME

read my post, dummy, i asked what THE GUY used, not you. i DID read your post  . kinda wondered about my idea, the way you talked about the clearance between the motor & cowl.............i just like to have something to positively locate a cowl, movement can cause cracking & ugly raw spots in the paint around the edges. might match your "ugly" work, though  . hey, drew we got us a "posting race" B) . i got ya by 2, for now.

Quiet or Rick and Ray will call us out for bench racing, and I'm finally racing again

don, we're dealing with drew here. if he can't pronounce it, he sure can't use it! how would you mount them? under the deck & cowl, so they but together? with no lip around the front, would they still hold well enough in a stuff or flip? never used them, not doubting, just wanting to learn.

Neodymium rare earth magnets totally rock. B)

As Robin also asked, how do you secure them to the underside of the deck-

The cowl is new. no worries there, just the underside of the front deck would be the concern, esp with the years of nitro in the glass ?? Not to mention there is no deck lip to mate them too, one would have to be horizontal and one vertical- would they hold that way?

Just use some 10penny nails, drywall screws and duct tape, that should hold it in place, and fit right in with the build theme

Hi Andy, how ya doin :p  :p

Make one. And if you roughen up the old 'glass real good with 80 grit and clean it well with denatured alcohol you shouldn't have any bonding issues. B)

Clear as mud now ;)

Thanks Don...

Rick,

I will make sure I place one of each under the bow for your little sister to cry about when she gets spanked-

" 10penny nails, drywall screws and duct tape "

But don't ya think 10penny is overkill

I'm already running a pound of lead in the nose ;)

go with the magnets. they are awsome. any size any strength. cost you more to ship then the magnets them selves. they are worth it. no o rings no snaps no cabinet latches. they center themselves and the cowl stays put. i use 4 20# magnets on my 1/8 scale and can pick the boat up by it. have not had a failer yet.

I was looking here-

http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/magnets.htm

And was wondering, could the "rod type" magnet be used on the forward end of the cowl with the " flat block type" magnets used under the lip of the deck, then a pair of flat block style on each rear corner ??? once in position I could notch the flat part of the magnets under the cowl on each side to properly align the front of the cowl.
