Craig,

I would use the cowl Twin-K90 sells with the boat. Those cowls are designed to make downforce, and the boats need it.

Gear drive hydro? Where did that come from?

Do you know much about the A45 FSR gear drive motor? Could be neat in a mono.... ;D

Ian.

Ian,

Well it seems I have inherited Stinger boats in its entirity... now have the templates for all the stinger boats including the Wizard mould (some coming very soon).. and in that batch was Tony's gear drive 21 hydro... Exhaust throttle and all!! :)

Dont know much about the 45 FSR gear drive... can ask if you want...

Craig

Craig (Mr Stinger),

Gear drive hydro? Hmmm, could be interesting...

Might be time to start working on the Next Generation Stingers. You could call them SG Stingers or Stinger Mk 2's! Maybe all the hysro designers on the board would have some input....

I would like to know if the 45 FSR is steel rod, needle bearings, disc induction. (the good stuff!) ;D

Nitrocrazed racing: Riggers are REAL race boats!

Ian,

Funnily enough the gear drive 21 is very similar to the hummingbird!!! Interesting because the boat is quite a few years old. Tony built it just after he sold out of the CMB distributorship (this has a Rossi in it) so it would be at least 6 or 7 years old...

As far as resurrecting the boats I am not sure really what I want to do there. My time is pretty limited and I think I would have to seriously look at composites and different timber to be a competitive product. Although i dont entirely agree with the super lightweight boats these days most people think a heavier boat is not going to be competitive. The Stingers were a heavier boat but MUCH stronger than the SGs for instance. Remember how many Stingers survived major incidents!!!

Anyway I will consider it, maybe with composite tubs... But the Wizard is a definite, just because I like the look of it!! LOL

Oh and I am getting some made this week... some in carbon, some in glass... :)

If you want to see real down force developing cowls have a look at what is used on the current Cajun Bullets...

As far as I know (and I will stand corrected if someone has other info) is that Hummingbirds are a development of the Roadrunner design, and Roadrunners were a development of the Pinckert design, so I guess the priciples behind the design probably pre-date the Stingers!

I think some of the current designs have compromised strength a little too much for a heat racing boat. My Hummingbird is a little heavier and stronger than when you saw it... ;D But there is no question that a lighter boat is faster simply because you can launch it with bigger props. My 90 will launch with a full size 2170!!! It will idle away from the bank with a H-50. Like Glenn Quarles was saying earlier with a light enough boat, launching big props is not a problem.

I think with light weight construction the trick is to make the effective size of the boat larger to recover some of the stability lost with making it so light. As I said my Hummingbird has a wider stance and longer afterplane than the 90 Cobra, which was otherwise much bigger. But it is still a little smaller than a 67 SG....

I think composite reinforced wood might be the way to go for tubs.

Note the turnfin on the hummingbird? It would be larger than any used on the stingers...

Carbon Wizards? Hmmm sweet! ;D

Nitrocrazed racing: Available for testing rigger designs....

Ian,

See there is the problem.... needing to spend time and effort in redesigning and building these boats... You then have to balance that against the cost of the competition. Is it really worth it?? Maybe for personal boats but to go into production??? i may assemble a couple of Stinger 45s (there are some tubs already cut out) and see how I go.

The first Wizard will be ready in a week or so... I will be doing that one in normal glass to see how it goes and look at carbon later for special orders..

Craig,

Time is always the problem! It is difficult to find the time to build and develop hulls, if I could then I would.... I have an idea for a twin, but it would need development. It takes me 6 months to put something like the Hummingbird together, imagine how long it would take me to do a scratch built boat!

Maybe I shall do some drawings and get Ozzy to build it for me... :p

Nitrocrazed racing: Man, that thing looks weird.....

Here is a geared down rigger that one of my racing buddies just finished. He is using an RZ-M

It's slow when the water is like a mirror, but it really hauls butt when it gets rough.

Geez,

Your away from the net for a week and you miss out on all the cool threads!!!!

Gene, 40 pylon pipes work well on 21's, but not quite as stable as a marine pipe. They work sometime's and won't work other days - pretty frustrating. The trick with pylon and parabolic pipes is the motor has to be revving it's @ss off to come into the band. This works very well with gear drives if the motor is up to the punishment. Use the CF pipe you have already - it works well on a TT.

Tom,

My FF21 with NR power will be using a Mac's unmuffled pipe a gadjet 21 pipe - you can see them at fastelectrics.com It's the pipe I was running in the geared mono.

Ian / Craig,

Did you ever see Evan Holbrows geared 21 rigger? it was unbeatable for years! I'm thinking of using a geardrive in a straightline rigger as soon as I finish all the other "projects" on the go at the moment!

Tim.

Hammer,

Nice looking boat! Are the geared riggers more competitive than the direct drive riggers?

Tim,

Welcome back! You were conspicuous by your absence... Check out the 30cc topic...

Yeah, I have seen that boat, but have not been that impressed (I haven't seen it that much). Actually if you are going to do a geared boat for SAW, how about a 2 speed from a car? ;D Launch some REALLY big props! 8)

The europeans seem convinced about the benefits of gear drives for oval racing monos. The A45 FSR features a nice looking intergral geared mount. Another Kingcraft project.... 8)

Nitrocrazed racing: I love that gear whine!

Ian! This geared down boat isn't as competitive as the straight drive boats under normal conditions. This guy is using this boat as a back up incase the weather conditions get bad. This boat is designed for very rough water only. Finishing all the heats can win you the race. That is the concept.

Ian,

Gear drive in submerged drive monos is definitely an advantage when you need driveability...

21 hydro... well we will see...

Craig

Craig,

Over the last couple of seasons the gear drive 21 Multi boats have proved to be unbeatable to the point that I even have a Mocom gearbox now after years of direct drive....

But a gear drive 21 mono did very well at the last NAMBA nats, and that was surface drive. I would like to try it with a 45...

Ian.

It's a shame my 21 mono went like a dog at the nat's - it's a real head turner when things don't fall off it! especially when you consider the cr@ppy motor in it.

Tim,

I have seen a 21 geared mono go here many years ago. One of the multi-racers put their motor/gearbox into a mono, I think it was a Youngblood. It was pretty quick, but didn't handle to well. I think the hull was too small. There is no class for 21 mono here so nobody has tried it since.

Ian.

Craig,

A real bitzer! It was a thunder tiger PRO21R! Did 50mph with the heavy GPS in it! (not an etrex) and the boat weighs a tonne - more nikki than CF!

First run the carby fell off! big lean out and messed up the piston.

Put a bodgy piston in for the second heat and the motor came out stripping the gears. Third run - far too rich and no mixture adjustment (or compression!!) Died on last lap in 2nd place 20 feet behind the leader and catching.

Fourth run lost a shaft and the BIG prop!

After that it was in the car!

Surface drive with gears has some potential if it is reliable!!

Tim,

I have a second unit ready to go including rossi 21, gear drive and exhaust throttle. I had a perry mixture on it in the last boat (NEVER AGAIN) so I really have no idea how it goes. I will be running the gear hydro soon so it will be interesting to see how it goes...
