Its seems like such an innocent thing to do, esp for experienced swimmers, but every year it seems like we loose someone to this one GOLDEN RULE being broken -

DONT SWIM FOR A DEAD BOAT -EVER. PERIOD.!!!!!!

I came real close about 5 years ago to swimming for one- was even in the water ( and that was after I had been warned never to do it) Im a very experienced swimmer and didnt think much of it, bout half way to the boat (wearing jeans only) the water temp and the fear of not knowing where the 10ft gator was that day kept me from trying it. Every time I read about this , Im glad I didn't keep going cause my heartrate was really high by the time I made shore

Prayers go out to the family and his poor friend that watched it happen.

just made that same decision a few weeks ago, drew. was trying your old mono out in the small pond in my front yard/pasture. boat died, thought real hard about going in. if someone else had been there, i might have considered it, but i was home alone, not visible to any road or neighbor. went back up to the garage, got a fishing rod & came back to retrieve the mono. although i grew up in & around the water in miami, i think about these articles, & i don't do it.......this man was local to me, kinda close to home, i'll keep his family in my thoughts & prayers.
