Ok saw the other post too, but specifics of the reason I wanted to build up one was a stab at Glenns design with a twist (fast but cheap enough that anyone could do one) Well that all went phooey with the hardware search and servo considerations

Break....back in a minute ;)

Sorry had to take a call,

The part I got burned out on was the endless search for the correct size rudder/strut and mount for a better price than a 125 and up, and a micro servo capable of rudder duties (better than 48 oz) for a decent price, not talkin 68 bucks either, I did design the radio box a little small but Sheeeesh!!!!!! There has got to be something out there, you should not have to spend a large amount of money to get one of these little pups on the water, kinda defeats the purpose,

Ya Know ?

Gene :D

Costs so far:

Ply for scratch built tub and sponsons with a used engine round 100 bucks total,

Seee........Ya dont have to spend a lot to get one goin, Least I didnt think so......

Think this is a excellent class to get goin on and bigtime fun if we can just get a few snags worked out ;)

dosen't look like alot of room for fuel in the pic but then again it is a 12 it should run on fume's the design looks cool B)

Thanks Mike,

Yeah the overall layout dim's are from a SAW 12 design that Tom and I did, Grim built me a tiny fuel cell for it, Seems like round 2 1/2 ounces or so,

The hardware search is the biggest PITA. I used Octura hardware, Gary Preusse set me up with everything for less than $90.00 .He now has a special kit that he had Octura make up for him just for us .12 racers. I think that Steve Hauge was one of the first to get one so it's kinda known as the Steve Hauge setup. He told me that he was checking with Ed Hughey seeing what he had which should be cheaper. If you have a problem fitting any hardware on the transom, get hold of Mach 5, he can make you up something. He hangs out in the electric area.

For a rudder servo, I've been using the Hi-Tec H81-MG but the 225 should be better.

Yeah, join the insanity!

Hey Ron,

Yeah!!! Thats a little better on the hardware pricing........Maybe a stinger style strut with piano wire drive like the electric dudes do, need to check out what everyone's been use'n fer sure :D

Hello Gene,

You see to me the hardware is simple, being an electric guy and running the speeds we do with say a 12 cell rigger I would only use a Hughey setup with a medium rudder and .130 cable. As far as a servo goes, I would use a Hitec 225bb/MG. Using an HS81/MG would work but your asking for trouble, there's some centering issues along with the 81 being pretty easy to break. Of course you wouldn't need the water cooling J-Tube but the rest is there.

the dpi plastic rudder is nice and light..... but a custom mount is required :(

After you blow the $4.50 for the rudder, there should be enough left in the budget to get a custom piece made. I will make one for anybody who wants to try it.

Mike

I've had 2 of those so far, Wade has one and Marty got the other. I've seen one complaint about the steering arm being weak. No problem there to fix. Cut off part of the arm (you need part of it as it fits in as part of the mount) and use a 1/2A control horn from an airplane. Align it's holes with the hinge then mount it as high or low as it needs to be. It could be mounted qwith just 2 lugs and cut the other ones off. A custom bracket could be made by removing the bracket base and bolting it to something like a carbon fiber plate or angle (I have some of this).

all I can say at this point..... and this might be too much..... I believe Mike Z and I will have an excellent solution to the rudder problem in the next few months.

forgive me if this was saying too much Mike...... but hey at least I did not post a picture. I sure would like to as i'm excited about it for sure!

Paul,

are you using a teflon intercept tube from the strut to the stuffing tube?? It looks like bare teflon liner in the picture??

Morning Guy's

Im checkin it all out and letting it soak in, more later........

Man thanks for all the reply's ;)
