I believe Terry Keeley made some little gauges that slipped through the glow plug hole to check the head clearance. Does anyone have this tool they would part with?
 
I second the solder and dial calipers. Always works for me . I usually just feel along the smashed out solder with the calipers and find the thinnest reading and that is where the squish is at.
 
You can also use a depth micrometer bolt liner down on a couple screw holes bring piston up to top dead center measure then flip the head button measure the step then subtract the two numbers
 
Depth micrometer easiest, most accurate method for setting clearance. Highly repeatable, measure deck height at TDC, measure button from touch-down surface to squish band, subtract difference....usually a negative (interference) sum, determine shim thickness needed for desired clearance.
Using used shims (pre compressed) a smidge more accurate, by maybe a couple of 1/10000"....not a big deal.

This isn't rocket science.

When I use the rod in the caliper to do that though I always wonder if I am perfectly flat when I push down and so I do check that way too but I confirm with 30 thou solder and sometimes I even rotate it a couple times over on the same solder and it seems to just smash to what it can smash too. I guess I really just don't think to much on it anymore just get er done and go running.
 
This one is almost up to TK standards.
Mitutoyo digital indicator on a 3D printed base that holds the sleeve down. I made specific ones for each motor, i.e. 91/101RS, 67/80hr, K-45, etc.

The head button surface seems to be angled not flat as well. I have no problem on the cylinder side with a regular caliper, it’s the head button side.
