I guess if the less expensive control works go for it.

You can also think of it this way. Good equipment is re-sellable and keeps its value. Routinely you will find Rc Hydro esc's that sold for 75 dollars resell for 45-50 dollars. I don't think you will find that kind of return on lesser quality equip. If you have a six cell boat and decide to upgrade it to 12cells what will the $40 control resell used for. Or will you even be able to find someone that wants it quickly?

Just some thoughts. Most importantly is to stall within your budget and have the most fun possible! Happy rc boating!!!

Got to go with Doug on this one. I've burned up every novak and tekin controller I owned over the years on 8 cells and less. The only RC-Hydros controller I ever hurt was on a 8 cell SAW boat pulling 95 amps cont. When I exited the trap the motor spooling down blew the shotkey. Everything was fine till the end of the next pass and there was no shotkey to protect the controller. If I'd had 2 shotkeys installed I'm sure it would have had no troubles. I'm an RC Hydro's believer.

I've never used the Castle brushed controllers, but have been very happy with the BL controllers.

I know Castle has the 55 amp Pegasus brushed controller which in my mind is cutting it close. I don't know if I'd save a buck and go with the 35 amp controller. The first time you pick up a leaf or plastic bag on your prop you're asking for trouble. It's nice to have a little in reserve. One larger controller is cheaper the a blown little one to be replaced by the larger one you should have bought in the first place.

I usually treat my Novaks/Tekins like a 2/3 speed Hughey.

Run fast and never keep it in the slower speeds and you will be ok. I don't run them till dumping either, unless its a pleasure craft.

If you don't seal Novaks/Tekin and get them wet once forget it, the newer ones go bad, usually the 410 Novak series don't. I have 2 Tekins and 2 Novaks that are 3 years old and still kicking and have only seen water and lots weird conditions.

Its all in how you treat them and all mine have been bought used.
