Guess I went back TOO far.

First place speed southeast, 1970 Pinewood Derby.

Don't have pic of boat, hand built tunnel made of balsa covered with dope (huff n stuff
biggrin.gif
) .049 cox with pusher prop, no radio, just a rudder bent for wide circle, circa '72.

Tunnel was a MRP Mach 1 abs plastic, traded my RC10 for a 3.5 and a Attack 2 channel. 1988 Went to the pond with Gene, and a week later bought a Trophy Tunnel. Joined Brandon club.
Yea MRP ABS tunnel-Took it down to Tomales Bay in CA. Really ran well on the Cool/damp coast air-had so much fun I ran it out of fuel and seized the P/L.

My 1st boat was a wooden Dumas DV-10 with an OS .10 engine. I ran it until it fell apart. :D

Before I graduated to real RC boat I also got a Kyosho ABS plastic boat (can't remember the model) with a geared OS .10

Since we are going back in time. Here is where I got my start in R/C boats. It's been 18 years ago and I can't remember what make tunnel it was and I think the other was called a War Machine. The mono was one I threw an outboard on for my son. I handed him my air brush and he had a blast painting it.

I designed the war machine and Steve Speas built it. Steve wanted to build fiberglass boats for me when I had Twin Craft boats. I gave him the plug for this boat figuring if he could build this.......he can build anything. He did build a mold and then the product. We raced them for a few years but you had to set them up exactly like the instructions or they didn't work well. He got 4th place at the indy unlimited with his War Machine one year. We found out the boats needed an Octura streamline water pickup behind the right sponson to hold the corners just right. What a trip down memory lane. **** Tyndall's dad told me it was the ugliest boat he had ever seen. I can't disagree, but I had a lot of fun with it as a twin engine boat.

oh, my first boat was a 1/8th scale fiberglass hull with a McKoy 60 red head airplane engine with a water cooled jacket strapped to the head. I have video, actually converted from 8 mm film, of me and my dad and brother running the boat in 1967, but no still picture. I have lots of airplane photos from that time though. I was flying U control model planes when I got my first boat.

I started with a Leecraft mono with a picco 45 and actually met Tommy Lee down at the flooded out Winternats THAT FIRST YEAR. Then got a used 20 size areomarine cat and put another picco 45 in it way over powered but really neat!

John....I thought it was kinda cool looking when I bought it. After I gave it this paint job it really looked mean. I don't know who set it up but it ran like a raped ape. I still have the set-up sheets for it. Wish I never sold it.

Octura Tom's Cat, wood frame build, no glass... K&B 12mm.. Ran that boat for 2 years.. Once a week before Christmas while the snow was falling around us. The following week, the locals were playing hockey.

Circa @ 1970, a small Dumas Ski-daddle kit running an ENYA .09 engine. No radio control, just set a bit of rudder deflection and toss into the pond. Run in circles till it runs out of fuel or hits a duck :p ( my age @ 11 yrs old )

Numerous flat bottom air boats with .049's sent running across the local park grass areas after hour once the lawn sprinklers were done. That was fun too !!

First RC @ 1974 with a larger Dumas Ski-daddle 60 kit. ENYA .60 cross flow engine with a Kit "Knight" radio set ( heath kits competition at the time ) hard shaft running gear with an Octura 2.2 prop, marine specialties rudder /water intake block. ( Age @ 15 )

** And for you youngsters ..... started with a Leather shoe string !! .... Glow plug ignition by a big red Ray-o-Vac 1.5 Volt dry cell.

Holly crap !!! how far we have come :D

My 1st boat was a Dagger Boat Works SDV40 mono with a OS 46VRM motor, Muck nitro pipe. 1st time out, i lost the radio, and the boat took off clear across my lake and ran up on opposite shore. (1/4 mile or so wild run) Boat just had some small paint damage from running into the side of a old rusted metal drum. We didnt have a retrieve boat, so went back to my house and drove the car over to the other side of the lake. That was in the late 1980s. I was hooked ! Richard D

My first R/C Boat was a Atlas Van Lines with a 40 K & B airplane engine with a water cooling-clamp and a Airplane Radio took one cold winter to build it in the garage (heated in Indiana) When the water softened I ran it in a small channel and hit the dock first thing, not much damage, so took it out in the lake on a pontoon, thought it was the fastest boat in the world, them met Steve Ball, and went to a race, what a surprise, it was the slowest there, did not finish a heat as it was so heavy that would just get up on plane, not enough Horse power, put in a OS VRM and it broke a rod sent it back to OS and the gave me a new engine .This all happened back in the early 70's Sold that boat and started again with a Spider 40 Rigger. P S my wife go me into R/C boats because she did not like me racing big cars after I got knocked out while racing. We've come a long way baby!!!!!!
