Turn fin tests

For my turnfins, I use 14ga (.075) 304ss. It takes a long time to grind the fin sharp. Currently, I start to sharpen the fins 1-3/4" from the leading edge. If I sharpen the first 1/2", would I see a decrease in speed.

Why don't you use alu fins? All my fins are only sharpened at 1/8 leading edge!
