hi Leighton,

I'd look for a 4-flute tap for aluminum.....may be easier to find and will produce a better job in aluminum.

I've been using 2 flute gun taps lately and they are great in aluminum. However, on the machinist boards they claim that 2 flute spiral taps are the way to go. I need to stop by the tool shop and spend a little cash this week. I'll let you guys know how they work out.

if you order one from mcmaster-carr, you'll want to go ahead and get the correct sized drill bit as well. they go hand in hand

I was a machest for 27 years four hand tapping two flute taps work great . Yes a four flute is a hand tap but will easyer then the 2 fluteand yes you want a spyral point tap . If you are tapping a blind hole a spyral flute tap works great pulls the chips up out of the way. Scott

Guys,

I guess the "gun" taps I have been using are also called "spiral point". The guys I have been talking with suggest that the 2 flute spiral flute taps are the best for aluminum, blind holes or not. The spiral flutes pull the chips out of the hole so the tap won't bind and snap. Probably not a big deal on a hole where the depth is about the same as the diameter, buy on a deep hole like a motor mount it will make a difference.

Good luck,

Chris

Ah! Spiral. I see, I see.

I'll get shot for saying this, but drill the hole one size larger, put the tap in a drill, lube, line it up, and LET IT EAT! :D

I do the same thing but use a screw gun set at a light setting. Since I've been doing this, I've not broken a tap.

 Preston, Joe and I will be at the pond running boats while you sort this one out :D

that's my exact method too.......the way I see it, I'm working on 4 holes in a .21 motor mount, not the space shuttle.

haven't seen one let go yet.
