I havent heard anything lately about how the program someone was building for boat races is progressing
 
There is some great software development going on in Australia for Race Management Programs. I must also mention Ron Byrd's Race Manager software, it is really good to use, just wish you could enter heat times too.

The AMPBA currently has a program that goes from the entry stage, through frequency conflict detection, heat drawing, heat running (with automated lap-counting system) and points processing to final position output.

Plus I know of another that has similar functionality, with slightly different user interfaces (written by an individual).

We have been using lap counting buttons with audio timer countdown for years over here. There are no clubs in Aus that use a transponder system as of yet, but something similar can't be too far away for a total fuss-free event that takes much of the load off the race organisers. And with the advent of 2.4GHz, the systems are becoming easier to write.
