Please dont judge the race from the view point of the camera, the official judges at the stand make the calls.
The Silver Cup final race was interesting, I was not sure if i jumped, didnt really know who was leading, did faintly hear a call that Timex and Houston and Madison were legal.
They had to check the video and talk about 5-10 minutes to figure out the winner.
Looking at the video the start at 2:45 was close, but the judges called out "Miss Timex, Miss Houston and Madison were the first legal boats" at 2:47
Not sure about David P with the US at the start he was fast at the line but still legal, I was almost to a stop early and Ken Stang was way over the line, Madison was was back but caught up fast.
So we started racing i was chasing David and Duke M with the Madison was on my tail. About the 4th lap 3:50 David busted bouy 2 so they gave him a extra lap.
Duke almost passed me on lap 5 but got into some rough water and I stay ahead to win.

Congrats Duke. I've watched this video over and over. Plus I saw it in person, just my opinion. If 3 boats jumped Duke led wire to wire. If 2 jumped David led till he smashed the bouy.

Agree.. this was Dukes win..

You can clearly see the Miss US was not over. Its hard to tell in the shot if the Houston was over but I bet not. (maybe)..

Ken was WFO and Phil off the power. Off the power but still over the start line.

The cam was what looked to be about 5' to the left of the drivers stand area. The start line in the center. If you triangle the video best you can this is not hard. Congrats Duke!

Dave got a hand full of that buoy and so that's a lap.. (no question) He was not forced in to it by the boat in front of him.

Having said this.. the win was handed to Phil by the CD.. its up to Phil if he wants to address it or not.. the CDs job Is over... I see it this way.. why would anybody want a win with an * attached to it. Not me... maybe just me...

You were present, I wasn't. But... the video cannot support any claims as to who was over at the start. The audio however says over the PA right away that the Timex, Miss US, & the Houston were the first legal boats.

The video cannot be used to determine the relative positions of the Appian & the Timex. It can however determine that at the sound of the horn, the Timex & the Appian were ahead of the rest of the field. The US was ahead of the Houston, & the Madison is not even in the frame.

Still captured from the closest I could get to the horn using youtube:

I cannot tell from the video. Why don't clubs use a string as the start line? The Saginaw club here in D2 use a string from the cd tower to the clock and it is as definitive as you can get. If you use a clock on shore then put a buoy tripod to run the line from. Very simple solution to this issue that constantly comes up. My 2 cents.

Agreed! Don't know how you can call accurate starts without it!

The second red boat in this pic is David Preusse's boat (if you follow the second red boat, that is the particular boat that ran over buoy 2, which is David) which should have put the first three boats over at the start as the Houston, Timex, and The Appian. First two legal boats at the start should have been the Miss US and the Madison. Since David went over buoy 2 (Miss US), that resulted in him being a lap down. Duke was the first legal boat to finish 6 laps.

Congrats Duke.... It was a hell of a fun race and I'm glad I got to pit/spot for you.

On a side note, making the decision that the CD made is a very tough one, and a decision had to be made on the spot, so I don't fault anyone. The 6 others on the table tasked with following a particular boat they were assigned to could have made things easier for the CD, though.

Just my 2 cents.

This IS the horn pic.. this screen shot was exactly at the horn.. regardless of the angle or start line the Appian was called over.. so then what was the timex?

dang.. wont post.. hang on..

Something I thought might work and be much easier to use for the start is a laser.

Anyone have any experience with these?

Sorry for the jack Phil...

This is just as the horn stopped blowing.. and I mean JUST.. gary was not called over.. the start buoy is in the center.. lets say gary was on the line.. Kenny was Clearly over.. the Timex is then over too..

I suspect the (two red boats) are to blame for the confusion.. its easy to do.. been there done that.

I guess no one can hear the audio?

It's called over the PA that the Timex & the U.S. are both legal.

One boat jumped, the Appian. So isn't that the most plausible answer?

Well just maybe the start judge confused the red US and the red Timex? If so the US was the lead boat and Duke second till David hit the bouy. If the club officials think that could have happen I think Duke is the winner. I would have no problem with that.

Phil Won !!!

ya know the camera would have to be exactly on the startline with next to no room for error.......like nascar and horse racing (photo finish / photo start)

We dont need instant replay added to are hobby..... time is valuable with all the classes we are offering now.

If anything could be said, make sure everyone knows the call.... I was pitting for Gary and I had no clue during the race who was over or not.... it was never really clear to me
