As I have a boat all apart right now, I would like to add a shaft oiler..

Anyone one have some simple low cost solutions? leads on existing products?

i added a short brass sleeve over the stuffing tube, drilled a hole in it that fits my oil can....shoot it full of grease before each heat..works great

Anthony here is a cheap but effective way to do it just get one of these in the right diameter for your stuffing tube http://www.mcmaster.com/#shaft-collars/=sga2dr drill and tap it for a water fitting, install on the stuffing tube lock it in place then add about a 3 inch piece of large bore water line. While you prep the boat for running set the rear of the stand off your table so the oil will drain out the strut and fill the tube with synthetic motor oil. Do that a couple of times, this is just coating the stuffing tube and shaft with oil, then right before your going to actually run the boat do it again fire it up and off you go. Every time for the rest of the day just before you fire it up fill the tubing with oil. When you pull the shaft at the end of the day it will be covered in "slime". Biggest obstacle with oil is that it is really messy and that shaft will purge oil for a while so be carefil where you put the boat . Tony J

Anthony, the easiest and most affective oilers I use are nothing more than a piece of the brass tubing shaft log material silver soldered to the shaft log itself. If you are unable to solder all the way around it, JB weld around the shaft log & oiler joint. Drill your 1/16'' hole before soldering.

Word of advice, you DO NOT HAVE to mount it close to the front end of the shaft log, all it does is make a mess in the bilge of the boat, 3' aft of the front end is a good place to start,, Mercury/Quicksilver gear lube plus (yellow label) works great, and doesn't stink like rotten eggs.

Anthony

I make a delron oiler that fits over the brass tube just like Tony Jacuzzi was talking about.

I know The woods unit is nice,.. but too expensive an option for me. I found these on OSE, I like the idea of using it as a shaft holder as well. I can't use those brackets like that but I can use some extruded aluminum angle and use it for a shaft support also. These are reasonable.. 15 bucks.. Going to put one on the sp21 and 40,.. I'll let you know how they look when I get them in the mail.. I see the oil recommendations here.. I'm going to have to get something from the autozone,.. If they don't have the marine oil Ill get some heavy oil that will not flow out so badly.. I'm guessing that the spiral of the cable will naturally move the oil down the shaft to the strut.. Getting cables in and out all the time can be a pain on the little boats.. looking forward to not having that issue any more..

Oilers....yuck. Why don't you guys just grease the shaft. It will stay on the shaft all weekend and you don't have the mess.

Ricks?

Buckshot,.. I can 't help but notice those 2 giant holes in the back of your radio box,.. what is going on there?

John,.. seems like I always have issues with stuck collets, grease running out,.. etc etc.. I just want to put it in there and leave it for a while.. and get some good constant lubrication.

Ricks?

Anthony,

Dave Roach and I have been using what Tony Jacuzzi described for several years with great results. It works, it's simple, clamps the shaft tube to the stuffing box and is very light weight.

Thanks. Brad.

Rick;

I still like 2-4-C grease. Smells bad and stays on your hands all day. LOL

Thanks guys.. I bought these parts already so Ill give them a try,.. But the shaft collar thing is probably as good or better.. probably could have gotten a shaft collar at ACE hardware and had it made already.. I plan to change my exhaust mounting tonight,. maybe Ill work on a home made solution tonight as well. A delrin collar would be even easier for me to work with.. i guess just a piece of delrin tube or even rod could be used to make it..
