This was my first boat. My dad modified an old Skdaddle flat bottom and made a vee hull. Thing is I was such a terrible driver as a 5 year old that I often recall announcers asking people to back up from the shore because there was a good chance that I would run the boat up onto it. Fortunately, I don't hit the shore anymore just buoys. LOL!

I don't have one with me in it but I do have a shot of my first boat, taken in my barracks room at NAS Whidbey in 1984.

I built this Dumas Pak during the fall of 1982 while based at the now closed naval training base in Millington TN. My tools consisted of a set of X-Acto knives, a hand crank drill, a few drill bits and a wood block that I wrapped with sandpaper. The "finished" boat was painted with Formula U, white from a spray can with the graphics hand brushed. Not knowing any better, I used the Dumas hardware pack, an HB20 for power and a Futaba twin stick radio. Needless to say, since I built it per the directions, the boat was poorly assembled, overweight and underpowered. It did run but, unfortunately, never was able to get up on plane. It was wrecked, to this then inexperienced builder, four years later in Blackfoot ID. Due to failing receiver batteries, it hit a pile of rocks in the pond I was running at which resulted in a destroyed transom, several broken skin panels and soaking the unsealed internal framing.

Here's what 30+ years of building experience can do:

This was taken at Sellersburg IN, July 2, 2011 and was built using the framing from the same type of Dumas kit built 30 years prior as templates

The first one only looks good because you can't see all the flaws

Lol. I was at that race. Jerry Crowther believe it or not, was at some of these early races driving a tunnel hull!!!!!! I remember Carl Van Houten, Tommy Lee, Carl Sturm, John Otto, Terry Moore, and others being there!!! Good times. Thanks Bradley for making us look really old!!!...lol
Here is a video of the 1990 Spring Nats. I wasnt sure which year this is. You will see your Dad and his team in their Circus Circus Pink at one point in this video!!! I spend tge entire race chasing Carl Sturm. I was faster but he got me on the start and I could not get around. I am driving the original white Leecraft XT 120. Enjoy...

Wow thanks for the links I see some old friends in those video's, pics and articles!

I was racing RC Cars in the 80's on the local circuit and built my first couple of boats in 1980 however I didn't discover the local club until around 1988 or so.

No pics from back in the 80's but here are a few from the 90's. I had RC Boat Modeler mags with several write ups I was in but I will likely not find those.

How about this picture. Don Pickert took these pictures and sent them to me a few years ago. It is Doc Turner and myself at the 1986 Internats in Huntsville, Alabama. I set the F hydro record the first year that we used the electric photo timing system for the Trophy Trials. That record stills stands today. All of the records were set aside as permanent records at the end of 1987. And the records we have now started from January of 1988.

It was 1979 and we used to run FSR classes....I'm the one with the white boat with a rear wing equipped with an OS 46......in 1983 I built my first rigger(Crapshooter) using a Flying Model article written by John Finch.Gill
