Conservative timings and huge head clearance and low compression = less performance = less part failures. Also, it allows them to work on less than average fuel at various altitudes without detonation. Not ideal for power, but they don't have a Novarossi price tag either.
The engine was originally designed for use in 1/8 scale buggies, and then adapted to marine use. There wasn't an airplane version.
The car head had the button and fins as 1 item (no separate button) so no good unless you planned on running air cooled only, and not a lot of room for modifications. I modified a car head to take a seperate button once - big job. I also cut most of the fins off it to build up some heat in the engine.
