Hello all,

I've seen many really nice paint jobs on here, and as a matter of fact I just finshed up my first custom paint on my boat. Like the title says I would like some advice on what sort of clear coat I should use. I know it would probably be beneficial to clear it with an airbrush, but alas I have no access to one. Really i guess what im asking for is recommendations on what sort of rattle can clear coat to get.

Let me know what you guys use. Thanks for your help as always!

P.S. here is a pic of my new paint on my Dunlap 27 Tunnel :)

Back in the day, i used pactra polyurethane paints and clear on my boats before i had access to spray equiptment...but be aware, it only protects up to around 25% nitro.....can you find a body shop to apply a clear coat of imron or similar urethane paint on your boat? automotive paints hold up to much higher percentages of nitro...i use imron on my boats and 60% nitro...no problems!

Hi,You can find a cheap air brush at your Big Lot store for uder 10.00. The paints and clears I use is at you NAPA stores. It's made by matinsernior, and the system is called Cross Fire!! Very good paint system!! The two stage clear are low cost!! The quart of clear is 16.00 and a quart of hardner is 20.00 and a quart of reducer is under 10.00.I'd been using there paints since 92 and no problem with there paints. I been doing autobody paint for about 20 years.

Like Bill said, ask somebody at a local body shop, "acrylic" urethane is the minimun protection you want

on these nitro boats. Autobody guys shoot the stuff all the time and they will usually help you out.

Question: what type of paint is on there now? They will ask you that question,, generally, (and thats

a hellofa word to use in auto painting) the clears are somewhat benign and will cover several types of paint.

But there is always a risk in painting your boat this way, a risk of the clear not bonding or components

in the clear mix attacking the paint underneath.

Thanks for all your help guys. There is actually an auto body place pretty nearby that I'm gonna try and get a good one done. I just have to clean up all my lines and get it ready for that now. BTW I used testors model paints, which are enamel based, though i cannot remember what my base coat was because that was done a long time ago (it seems very tough though). Do you all think that the paint will survive the clearcoat?
