just getting into rc boats picked up this a scale pay&pak wood hydro about 36" used.I needs a motor and electronics for it dont know what to run gas,elect just want to play do not plan on racing used stuff or new thanks
 
Scott, I worked on re-doing a Dumas Pay 'N Pak style hull in the fall to get it going for someone. While you could do electic, I think the hull is a bit to large and heavy to use the commonly available electic powerplants and electronic speed controls (like from the UL1).

Most of those old style Dumas 3 point hydros used a K&B .45 inboard marine engine. You should be able to find one on e-bay in the $75-$100 range. I would try to get one that has an RC carb instead of a venturi and exhaust throttle. Using the RC carb is easier to use on a 'sport use' hydro.

The other 'big' thing you will need, if you do not have one, is a radio system that has the transmitter, receiver, and two servos (one for steering...one for throttle). Your local hobby shop should have entry level pistol style radio systems that start around $50. Some of the newer radio systems use cellphone tecnology (no crystals) on 2.4 megahertz and cost a bit more but are far superior to the older style crystal type systems. They start around $80.

The boat I worked on needed to have a new driveshaft and the original turnfin replaced as the original ones were inadequate. It would help if you could take some pictures (top, bottom, rear, etc) and post them so we could see what you have and the condition. RC
 
I have to agree with Roger on a good bit of his post. As far as radios, I would recommend buying one without servos. My reasoning for this is that almost all radio sets with servos come with "standard" servos with 50 inch-ounces of torque. While this is more than enough for the throttle, it's not enough for the rudder. These three would be good options for entry level use:

As far as a rudder servo goes, you need one that's fairly high in torque, this one would be a good choise:

thanks for the tips i wanted to run gas engine thats what i will be looking for and i will get picks up soon thanks again scott
 
Unless you can find a VERY SMALL gas motor, you will have to run a nitro motor. A 36" boat normally uses a .45 sized motor due to the size of the motor case and narrow engine bay
 
I meant to say nitro motor not gas also thanks for the links that helps alot also do thay call .45 or .60 motor any thing other than .45 .60 thanks scott

You'll really want to run a .45ci (7.5cc) engine. Running a .67 (11cc) in it will give you more headaches than enjoyment.

I have to agree, Brad. Anything bigger than a .45 will overpower the boat and it will be more of a headache than anything else. The bigger engine will require a bigger prop and tuned pipe to load the engine properly, will require a larger fuel load and may require adding weight in the front of the sponsons to keep the boat on the water. Stick with a .45 and it will be much easier to set up and run. Engines and pipes can be purchased new, here in the forum, from Alan Hobbs (AA engines), Glenn Quarles (Nova Rossi) and Stuart Barr (CMB) as well as both new and used from other boaters in the "For Sale" area

I would recomend calling Stu bar and get a cmb 45 vac and a nitro pipe then send it to steve wood so he can clean it and set it up for ya

I am not sure he needs that much motor for an old Dumas boat.

Unless you are going to race this boat there are lower cost options than the CMB VAC (it is an excellent motor) like the OPS or a new older model CMB or Picco.

I am sure if you ask on here what everyone has for sale you will get responses

Almost any marine 45 would work but, as already stated, unless you plan on racing, the CMB VAC is overkill.
