Found a boat recovery post on Off Shore Electrical Site. I have a old Kyosho SPA 240WS to use for the drive train. I know nothing about this motor as to what battery, speed controller to use. If anybody can help me out with info or a old speed controller would be great.

That is an OLD upgrade brushed motor for kyosho's ultima, optima (& others). Any of the older 1/10 scale speed controls will work. Get one with BEC, you can eliminate the RX pack. NiCad or NIMH packs will do just fine if cost is an issue. MAH may be an issue with nickel packs, 2s lipos will give you 7.4 v, damn close to the 7.2 v available with the nickel packs. 9.6 v is the upper voltage design limit of that motor, 3s lipos would prolly make it & a brushed speed controller a little toasty! 3s life might be OK at 9.9 v, but not sure for how long? I'd stay lower on volts, motor will live longer at lower voltage, unless you start retrieve boat racin' (-:

Started looking at the BAC controllers one question, what AMP rating should I get if I run the 7.2 volt system? Like posted this is for a boat recovery platform so not running fast just in and out. Not used for race events. Thanks again for the above info. I still need to understand all that you wrote. First time with any electrical running gear.

Back when I ran 1/10 scale off road, the speed controls weren't rated. More of a 1 size fits all deal. 1/10 off road all ran 540 sized brushed motors, which your's is. You had stock/6cell 7.2v nicad or mod/7cell 8.4v. There was 8 cell/9.6v, but more for on road or carpet racing. I don't know if finding brushed became speed controllers is easy today or not.....search eBay for "Tekin" or "Novak" in toys&hobbies/radio control&control line. Those were the brands I ran back in the middle 80's. Your motor is a milder mod wind, shouldn't be too hard on the controller. Simple stuff the BEC lead goes to your switch, the actual controller "control/servo" lead goes to the throttle port on your RX. I hope you know where the heavy gauge battery wires go....lol!

I remember when I first got started in r/c boating I tried to up grade my boat with that exact motor. So I ripped out the old 550 can motor and transmission and headed out to the pond. Well it went fast for about one minute then the magic electric smoke came out . That motor is a mild modified motor you'll have to put a trans behind it, as for any old brushed motor. Option two would be to get a crawler motor. These are low rpm motors and have lots of torque, you will not need a trans. Look here for motors and ESC I put two of the 550 motors in an old Clod Buster truck it was unstoppable

So here is the new plan I'm using a airplane motor with push prop to drive my recovery craft. Last week was a very large R/C Flea Market in PA. I picked up a Hobbico Electristar Out Runner .46 motor and a Eflite 60 (60 amp Pro SB Brushless ESC) and a new Thunder Power Li-Po 2070 mah 18.5V. I'm told these items will all work together. Got a great deal on all items. I have a Triton 2 charger but now I need a Equinox Balancer and Interface to charge my new Battery I'm told. My question is can I charge direct to the +\- terminals with my Tirton charger or is that a bad thing.
