The other day i went driving my boat. The first tank of gas it ran great it sreamed i also had it running a bit lean on my third needle. I ran te boat out of fuel, i filled it back up and it wouldnt go more than 20 feet and die. I moved my needle all over the place couldnt get it to run for more than 20 feet. Dose anyone know what could be wrong. Its a Nova Rossi .21, with a remote needle valve.

First thought is that it is lean. If you are certain that this has been eliminated then I would suggest checking the bearings. Often poor bearings are compensated with a lean mixture until the bearings are just junk. To check the bearings remove the engine, the P/S from the engine and turn the crank by hand. If you feel a "bump" then you have a bad bearing. You can also put a srewdriver to the case and put your ear to the driver handle and listen for any "bumps" or "roughness". Some bearings are qualified by turning fast and others very slow.

Hey Nitrokid I see you are in Colorado and I do know there are some good boaters up that way that may be able to help you figure it out.

While Preston could be dead on with his post I would suggest eliminating all other possibilities first so I am with Rip on this one to first try a new glow plug providing that you know that you are at a rich setting again. If this does not help look for obstructions in the fuel system I.E. trash in the needle or a clogged pressure fitting on the pipe. Look for leaks in the system as well and if all else fails check the bearings and replace if needed.

Good Luck.........Ron

How about one that sounds off the wall? It happened to me and took a long time to find. I had a damaged reciever that was giving me the same problems that you described. It ran fine while starting it because the transmitter was next ot the boat. I'd launch it and after about the same 20 feet, it would die. I found damage on the circuit board. Sometimes they get banged around in the radio box.

Try a range check with your radio system.

This happened to me on my crappy nitro hammer  These are the top 3 reasons i can think of why it would do that.

1. Glow plug

2. Air in the line

3. Protect water from entering carb

4. Sometimes opening it up quickly will kill it ease onto the throttle until it warms a bit.

Brass tubing inside the tank can become porous and leak air due to attack by nitro fuel - particularly if you use K&S tubing instead of the one that comes with the tank.

Hey guys I cheacked the bearings luckly they were as smooth as butter I cheacked all the lines all clear and good so I changed the plug. Now I just need to find a way to get to the pond i'll let you know what happens.

Thanks

Well guys bad news i went to a race this weekend and i still had the same problem one of the guys there helped me out. Sadly its my bearings but it happens. Now i just need to install the new bearings.

Thanks alot everyone.

Well im glad ya got the problem nailed but it sucks its not a quick/simple kinda fix. I find it interesting that a bearing would cause that, i dont see exactly how that would cause the engine to die.

Phil   ;)

When the bearings start to wear you start to loose the tolerance and as the engine starts to turn up the R.P.Ms it will start to pull in more air through the crank shaft. the engine will sound good on the stand but as soon as you rev it up and put a load on it it will lean up.

I was told a a race if the engine is running bad and you can't figure out what is wrong with it there are 3 things to look at.1 BEARINGS, 2 BEARINGS, 3 BEARINGS

I'd like add my two cents on a engine not runnin' right. Engine normaly, High

Performance outboard, Highly modified Thunder Tiger , all of a sudden, Bwaaahh

15 mph,,after a normal launch. Checked everything,,Next heat,,same thing,,What

The,,(Won Both Those Heats at 15 mph). Last heat,,engine hard to start, Real

Hard to start,,,Finally it started,,and seemed to wind up a little Too good as the pit

man headed for the water, and me toward the drivers stand. Only to look at my pit man shaking his head "no" and showing me the rear of the boat. OK, back to

the hot pits,,Franticaly,,only to find that the plug had spit out,,Installed new one

quickly and restarted,,same fast walk to the,,and Hey!! "It Spit The Plug Out Again"

That was the last heat of the day and then a two and a half hour drive home. I

Checked the engine out,,What I thought , Totally,,and even took it to the next club

race,, two weeks later,,Ran OK in practice in the morning,,and Bwaaah,,15 mph.

To make this all shorter, I finally found the problem! I had used a different pipe and header combo Three Races earlier,,Almost a month! and didn't change the

Header Spring!! It was too long for the the new combo and it would Blow the

header partly off and sometimes it would get stuck partially open,,it didn't make that much of a noise difference, but I do remember it " winging a "little Too Good"

With semi straight exhaust these motors will wing up to a point where a "Turbo"

grind on a crank will go out of balance and spit the plug out in about 5 seconds.

One simple thing on these motors can drive you Nuts!
