G'Day,

Are there any certain receiver brands i should steer clear of? Looking at 40 Meg FM

What about different brands of crystals? Is there a difference between them?

Oh while i am here i might as well ask if anyone has any 40 Meg FM RX's for sale that are in good condition ;) oh and crystals are needed aswell :p

Thanks

Kris

Kris,

Still dont know what you have against 29 meg AM and 36 meg FM. They are the most common frequencies used here in OZ

EMS Racing This Hertz me

Kris,

There is single and dual conversion receivers and crystals. Stick to the same brand and you should be OK.

Craig,

29AM isn't so hot and 36MHz wheel radios are $$$$.

Craig,

I have nothing against 36 mate...just that i havnt seen any wheel radios on 36

And i want a radio that can do a couple of model memories (basically the functions an XR-2 or MX-3 have) and i havnt seen any on 29AM?

So same brand and i should be alright, sweet...do different brand Rx's work well with different Tx's?

Kris

Not all Rx and Tx work together, there is a phase shift(?) that is brand specific. Most Rx need the same brand crystal as well, so buying crystal sets could be expensive. In general Novak make an aftermarket Rx for most brands. I think the Sanwa Rx are not too expensive though. Beware of older Rx's that are on wide-band as well. I'm a big JR fan as they seem to be more stable through all the years. I have a box full of radios that I have gone through before landing on the JR's though. :p

Kris...

There are 3 JR 36 meg FM wheel radios ... The R1 3 ch 10 model memory , the R756 which I think has about 5 memories (Al M. has one of those) now out of production and the XS3 6 model memory 3 channel FM sells for $299 but reckon you could get it cheaper. It is also crystal free. Looks like it may be 27 meg but FM on 27 meg would be pretty safe. If you want to get more information check the modelflight.com.au site.

There are good Futaba radios too but I am not familiar with the range

And there is a Hitec aggressor CRX that may work...

EMS Racing Yes I still use my JR X388 stick radio

I'm a fan of JR too. Word of warning tho' - get an XR3 rather than the XS3 if you can find one. The XR3 has less model memories and uses crystals but is a very stable radio. Particularly the reciever.

The R756 is a great radio also. Hard to find now. It used the same case as the original KO EX5 which has a great feel to it.

Tim,

Interestred in why you think the XR3 over the XS3???

And one other thing with JR... The R610 RX from JR is only $99 and 13 grams!!!

No use spending $165 on an R330s!!! Other bargains include flight packs which are RX, servos, Nicad pack and switch..

R700 4x577 servos, 600mAh pack and switch for $189

R610 2x371 microservos for $148

Makes it pretty cheap to have one TX and multiple RX... I have 9 boats running now and 3 Tx only... the R1, the 388 and a 4 channel stick radio (bought a complete radio brand new on Ebay for less than I could buy the RX and servos!!! Also gave me another alternate set of crystals just in case)

EMS Racing What a plug for JR!!! *disclaimer prices are Australian dollars and are retail figures.

Craig,

I think (could be wrong) Tim is refering to the Receivers no likeing ANY moisture AT ALL!

Radiomodels.com.au seems to have good prices also, but i think i will have to do some homework and not rush into it...

An XR-3 would be a good option because i already know how to use the radio, but I wouldnt mind a change.

Right now i am divided between:

Hitec CRX - Good radio, just at the very top end of my price range

Sanwa MX-3 - nice radio, but sanwa...not sure if JR or Hitec Rx's will suit it

JR XR-3 - JR Seems to have the most readily available gear

I appreciate the help...when i buy the new radio i need to look into getting at least 1 more Rx and set of crystals at the same time

kris

Kris,

If you are chosing between Hitec, Sanwa and JR there is no choice...

JR!!!

EMS Racing *disclaimer I have no financial interest in JR... Just have a lot of boats that HAVENT CRASHED due to JR radios.

I know I'm the one that posted the link to the Sanwa MX3, but here is my take on it. The MX3 is the most Bang for the buck,,,, but the JR XR3 is worth the extra money if you can afford it. I have nothing against the Futaba's, just they are not as popular over here.

For all the JR PCM fan's, the PCM "S" receivers are really coming down in price! Unfortunatley you can't use S with the 756's. <_<

Correct ;) Plus the switching of channels is a C.D's worst nightmare!

I forgot to mention a few things earlier.

The R756 also is a radio that you can switch modules! (handy if you race internationally)

The XR3 third channel is a bit tricky. I modified mine and love it now! Tricky job to do as it uses digital button inputs rather than a trimpot.

Kris ,

RMS in Perth are great. I buy from them regularly - just bought some stuff yesterday! Great service!

Tim.

RMS, try to talk to Bob or Jon ;)

they won't do a 36mhz wheel radio though, you will have to go to Model Flight for one of those.

JR-756 is damn good radio. I had one & really liked it, it just couldn't hold more than 6 boats. How much is $500.00AU in US dollars??

$350 us

For comparison an R1 new over here is about $520au with one PCM receiver.

I have 3 756's and just aquired a second hand R-1 to replace them, still have not programmed it yet though

$350 with 6 PCM receivers is a heck of a deal. The PCM receivers, which are still current production, are $120.00 each.
