Mono Tank Mounting

I recently bought a used Youngblood mono and its in the process of being repaired and rebuilt with some new hardware and tanks. The question I have is what is the best and easiest way to mount the fuel tanks in the hull? The setup that was in before was a 1/8" sheet of plywood that was floating between the engine rails. It has a 12oz and 1oz tank that was on top of the plywood and secured down by rubber bands stretched from each engine rail. I am wanting to install the tanks but have too many options running through my head as to how to do it.

What have you used that works? Please give details. Pictures would be very helpful.

my .21 mono had a 12 oz sullivan hard tank strapped down with zip ties, just drill holes in the rails and loop a zip tie through, push the tank under the tie, then tighten it ...if you do that, be sure to do one behind the tank to keep it from slipping out in a wipeout.

Thanks Joe, Do you sit the tank directly on the hull bottom with foam or did you use the tank tray method?

neither...it just sat directly on the fiberglass

Sounds easy enough. You didn't have any problems with foaming of the fuel without the foam insulation underneath?

Hey,

Over the years we have built 17 or so Youngblood monos. We always used a piece of 1/8 plywood cut to fit between the rails. We would then cut a hole in the middle of the plywood (same shape as the bottom of the main tank) so that the tank sat recessed through the plywood touching the bottom of the hull. We fiberglassed the plywood mount to the engine rails. We drilled 2 holes in each engine rail and used zip ties to hold the rubber bands in a criss-cross pattern over the tank. We usually forced the small hopper tank between the main tank and the engine rail. Use a little silicone to secure it in place. Never had any trouble w/ this set up.

russel....i used a 1oz hopper to take care of bubbles in the tank, never had any problems with the setup. the hopper also helps if you need to correct the CG a little, cuz you can put it wherever you need to.

Lamar, If I was to let the tanks sit on the hull bottom, the tanks would be below the carb more than an inch or so. You think this would cause a fuel draw problem?

If you are not running pipe pressure it might create a problem, but if you are running pressure everything should be fine.

We used the above mentioned method for everything from .21's all the way up to .90's and we never had any problems.

In fact the first 3-4 Youngbloods we had were Almost Ready To Run boats that we bought from Tidewater in Bastrop, LA and that's how they were set up. We just copied those boats on all of our future purchases.

Does your Youngblood have the flat ride pad or is it a true V-Bottom? Just curious... Has nothing to do w/ the tank set up. Jim Youngblood was just starting to play w/ the flat ride pads when we quit racing around 90-92' or so. He built a few for us to try during SAW trials. OK for SAW, but we never got them to perform well in heat racing trim.
