For you guys running surface drives exiting the transom of your mono, how do you adjust the thing? I've seen "stingers" that Warehouse Hobbies carries but I really don't understand how they work. I've also seen what looks like nothing more than a brass stuffing box tube extending out past the transom to the prop. How in the world would you adjust that? Does it have enough strength to stay put without a strut holding it  ? I'm real confused. Can anyone post some pics of their surface setups for me? Thanks for helping me understand!

Danny

Danny, Here's the setup I have on my Youngblood mono. Hope this helps......

Russell, those pics definitely help me understand how this works. It looks like you have a solid, short piece of brass stuffing box tubing exiting the transom. At least I now know that I don't have to purchase one of those expensive "stingers." BTW, what is the benefit of them?

Russell, it doesn't look like there is too much up and down adjustment capability with your setup. Maybe a whole lot isn't needed?

I run the same set up. All you should need is one deg either way, the system will bend that much.

Danny, Yes just exit the transom with the stuffing box tube to the end of the strut. Cut it off there and install a strut bushing. http://www.rossisales.com/cables.html Make sure that the drive dog/prop do not touch the end of the strut when setting up, gotta leave room for the cable to shrink when you pour on the rpm's.

You have to run a collet drive with those set-ups, the WHH one you can still run a square drive with. ;)

Great. Thanks for all the replies. I've learned a lot.

Is there any rule of thumb for how far off the back of the transom the prop should be?

If you've got any more pics, I'd love to see them.

If I'm not mistaken, I think that there are limits to how far back you can take it. Check your orginizations rule book.

Russell, I'm not a racer so I'm not as concerned with the rules so much as I am with what will physically work or not work.

Further back is faster.

Further back has more prop walk. (its a leverage thing)

Further back may porpoise. (again leverage loading and unloading)

Start back and bring it in until it handles they way you want it too. It is a lot easier to shorten your flex cable than it is to lengthen it! ;)

Different strokes for different folks. We seem to find the closer the faster. Go figure.

Hmmmmmmm  ? It does make sense that it's easier to shorten than it is to lengthen a cable, though!
