Gene, I'm thinking Mike might want to borrow the rear sponsons I made for the 12 Riptide. : :) Just drill a couple of holes and insert tubes. It sure looks to me like he's building a SAW boat! He might want to take a closer look at Glenn's fronts.

Yeah if he's not thinkin SAW, He outta consider it :D

Oh man Glenn's boat just blew me away, After my jaw came up off the floor

I studied it VERY carefully 8)

Gene ;D

Thanks,

I like Andys sponsons. I sketched some drawings that blend the sponson into the turn fin spar, it also has some curves on the top side.

I am going to keep the length and width of my last .12 but the sponson tip will be a little more pointed.

Just need to figure out how to cover foam with all the curves in it and make them both the same.

Going to try two 1.7oz and one 5.0oz layers. Also added a silica/epoxy putty to the sharp corners.

I am getting better at laying up cloth, I think this one would of been good without the vacume bag. However I wanted to soak up the extra epoxy.

I made some hot wire patterens to cut some nice square pieces of foam for the front sponsons.

The bottom hull came out to 9mm thick and 2.5oz. 1.5 oz heavier than the first one. That 5.0 oz cloth really adds weight but it feels much better.

The silca/epoxy I brushed on gave it a perfect finish with NO pin holes. The only thing I don't like is the white color in it.

i thought the red/black weave was going on the outside.... that would look cool

Mike,

I have no idea at all of what you're doing or the process but it sure looks COOL. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I got the weight down on the top half by being careful with the glue and getting it in the vacume bag quicker. Saved .7oz.

looking good!! :D

Once you put the 2 halves together, will you still be able to adjust the strut?

How are the front sponsons going? any progress?

Yep this one is fully adjustable. I needed something to fiddle with.

Sponsons and booms are next. I am going to build some kind of jig to hold the booms and sponsons in place while I glue them in.

Mike,

Looking good! 8)

Are you going to put a rear sponson around that strut, or are you going to have a sponson that finishes in front of the strut, a bit like an SG?

How have you found the Kevlar to handle and cut etc?

Ian.

Hi Ian,

I have found on the 12 size riggers they work just fine with out the drag and weight of rear sponsons. I would really like to make some kind of very small narrow rear sponsons 1 on each side with a boom tube, kinda like the fronts are.

The kevlar has been ok so far to work with. It's best to stay away from using the dremel cut off wheel and sandpaper. I was able to get clean cuts using these shears.

The Kevlar/carbon 5.0oz. fabric lays down really nice it's soft and forms well. The fine weave 1.7oz. cloth doesn't form around the curves very good.

Mike,

I would have thought the 1.7oz cloth would have draped a lot easier than the 5oz cloth! The 6oz carbon I use occasionally doesn't drape very well, but I dont have a vacuum bagging setup either! :- I presume you are cutting thru the cured product with the shears too? Could be difficult on larger and thicker mouldings.

My personal feeling is that you will need a rear sponson. That tub has very little floatation or planing area near the back, so my guess would be that at launch the prop could end up very deep and the boat may have trouble. The rounded edges on the bottom near the back wont aid this either. But I could be entirely wrong!

Outrigger rear sponsons could be interesting, but be sure to have good clearance for the boom above the water!

A very interesting project! 8)

Ian.

If the weight bias is forward enough then you could probably get away without the rears as the prop would supply enough lift.

Mike,

Are you planning on streamlining the shaft and strut?

Tim.

Ian,

I thought the 1.7oz. cloth would have been eaiser too. Thats why I posted what I found. I really like this carbonkevlar stuff. The drawback to it is the weave pattern is hard to keep straight, it shifts around and comes apart. For layups without a vacume bag it could be much eaiser. I would be interested to see how straight 5.0oz kevlar is to work with.

The cured part I cut with the shears was about the limit.

Tim,

Any ideas on streamlining the strut and shaft? My thoughts are to just get it in the water and go from there.
