I'm building my first jae 12 and I've heard some guys say not to use the supplied wood screws to mount the turn fin. What should I use. Any suggestions and pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've never seen the kit in person before, but if it's possible, back the inside wall with some 1/8 ply and use T-Nuts. My scratch built riggers don't have sponsons that come back like the JAE .12 to accommodate the turn fin. I use this method for mounting my turn fin spar. The weight of the backing plywood is probably lighter than dowel anyway.

(You can see that the teeth on the T-Nut that I used in the picture are too long. They are easy to file down.)

Looking forward to seeing your build in progress, Jake.

Good Luck!

Marty

You can use the screws that come with the kit, first pre drill the holes for the screws, then put the screws in which forms thresds in the wood. Take the screws out turn the sponson on its side and wick some ca into the holes and let it dry. After it dries attach your turn fin. As long as you don't take them out and back in over and over you should be good. I have had mine in for a year with no problems.

Martin, so that you know, the JAE sponsons use wood dowels going through them where the turn fins mount.

Yes, use brass inserts to be on the safe side, it's worth the buck.

Martin? That sounds so formal B) Anyway Ron, I kind of correlated the JAE with the way the .45 Jaguar sponsons on one that I built some years back. It had dowels, too. I really wanted to put T-Nuts in them but the sponsons came pre-built. I ended up putting inserts in those, too.

See picture below :D

The screws will backout on you after your first run. Heres what incerts were using. Drill into the wooden dowls and screw that brass insert into the dowls, also put epoxy around out side of the insert so that will not ever backout on you.

I prefer what Jim said I 've done what he said no problems of striping yet. Weight wise pretty light

.I f you strip hit one more time with CA

Sorry, does Marty sound better? Seeing how Truex is in here too I just got used to calling everyone named Martin with their full name. I know how you feel though as I hate being called Ronald or even Mr. Olson. The neighbor kids call me Ron or Dad even though I'm not theirs (that I know of!). :D

Thanks for all the good ideas. I think I'm going to find some brass inserts. Looks like they would give the fin a sturdy mount.

dont like marty idea because in time that darn backer will come lose.. Its like the second gen MISS BUD 1/12 proboat hydro's .. the motor mounts engine wall use those and those dam thing came loss when I'd try to unbolt the rubber mounts.Had to rip the sides walls out of that hull and make new ones. CA Idea wont last long neighter in time do to moister factor and screws will backout. All the Threads I'd been seeing guys using these small brass inserts with no proublems.and these inserts dont hardly anything.

No worries about the name formalities. I'm just not used to being called Martin. When I lived in Japan, all my friends called me that. I didn't mind because the Japanese could pronounce Martin better than Marty.

Jake! I hope you will start a build thread and show us your rigger going together. Marty

I use the insert's and the work very well. My sponson's don't last very long a buoy gets in the way. I've had the press in ones start to turn on me. that's my 3 ed option.

I used the supplied screw,Just pre-drill the holes like suggested and then i put epoxy on the screws when assemled for the last time.It worked well on my 12 and 21 .When they get to apoint of not holding anymore i will drill the dowels all the way through and use nuts washers and bolts like i have seen done and what they do on the gas rigger.

If it were me and i was building one now and know what i know i would use nuts washers and bolts to hold it and be done with it the first time.Either way make sure you seal your wood.

Have fun.
