Hard to explain the feeling really,
put a 27lb 6inch diam / 12ft tall rocket to 4900+ft and landed in the same field I started from .
It was a Good Day :cool:
next is Bama Blast in October and it will get twice the HP :oops:

Hey Mike, I was led down the rabbit hole of f/b looking at a pic of Randy unpacking the Pro Series II stuff in my living room 9years ago today - and I tripped across the video of your Corvette on a H238m and had to smile . I was SOOO overly blown away by one / the gifts you sent us - and 2 how an H238 seems like an A motor to me NOW vs at the time it was an un obtainable event 😂

Hey Guys....well after 17years I'm finally getting back Into it....I'm and Estes guy and picked up a new RedNova today from local hobby shop....plus I have found a rocket club to enjoy this with....so on the 15th of January they have a club flight....and I will pull out the oldies but goodies....and go have a good time...

Haha.....like the boating isn't enough....wait until hipower rockets kick in....may need a second mortgage...
 
Been licking my wounds for a few weeks now, but Im ready to share now. Went for my Level 3 Cert flight a few weekends ago, with big ugly on a Gorilla M1665 white. The UP was absolutely stunning and easily covered the 7000ft it Simmed too. Took me a few days to figure out what happened , because there wasn't much left of the rocket to tell the tale. I made a rooky mistake and failed to load the apogee charge wells , that or the powder fell out of both wells( I doubt that) . Anyhoo - it came in ballistic from 7k plus. It did fire the main charges , but as fast as it was going they where pointless, all tho it did save the 10ft main chute and nosecone, about all that lived. The biggest piece of both altimeters I found was about the size of a stamp. Looks like the motor case went straight thru the av bay - as the case had damage also- Im really really hoping we can save the case.

Can you explain a little more about the different "charges" for the uninitiated?

Maybe just basically how the whole rocket launch sequence works...??

I just assumed that after the launch,, once the rocket hits max altitude, it fired a charge to pop out the chute and it floats back down...sounds like it is a little more complex than that ?
Does the rocket come down in multiple sections? (stages ?)

Gladly, try not to get too long winded. ;)
When you fly with electronics/ altimeters vs motor ejection, the altimeter does several jobs. It has its own barometric pressure sensor ( as the rocket gains altitude-there is an increase in internal psi ) at apogee- when the motor burns out and the rocket arcs over , it senses the lack of increase and immediately upon decrease , fires and e match the has a 4F black powder charge to basically blows the rocket into 2 sections with no chute. Some use a drogue- or small chute on this (event ) I fly drogueless - There are a million ways to skin a cat on HOW and what parts blow apart- it just a matter of who taught you - and they all work. so basically the rocket is now free falling in 2 large sections separated by long shock cords ( Kevlar ) . At the fliers desired altimeter setting ( it can be programmed in feet ) the altimeter takes over and at you desired altitude selection , it fires the 2nd E Match and BP charge and deploys the MAIN Parachute . If you popped at the top ( opened the chute ) at big altitude , you can kiss the rocket goodbye . In my case I was flying redundant altimeters ( liken that to 2 recevers in a twin ) so 2 altimeters , just in case one fails. Thats what makes me think I failed to load the apogee charges - because I never heard either on fire ( sounds like a shotgun) . Rookie mistake after 11 years and hundreds of flights , it happens. I always pack my charges the night before and the main charges where in tact- had I taken 2 mins and doubled checked the apogee charges , I would have my L3 and my bird still. Just like racing a boat, dont toss it in if your not prepared to loose it :cool:

It was an expensive weekend-
I have my purpose built L3 bird ready to go - I just cant do it in Fl - waiting for Georgia next October - As it Sims at 14900ft , our club waiver is 15k and we dont need to piss off the FAA if it breaks the waiver, they can track our stuff from Tampa International and Jax :oops:
