Heat wrapping

Where do you get the tape? If it's a used pipe whats best to clean it with?

 Brake cleaner then after that I use some Windex wipe it clean let it dry and tape it.

Julian, when you did the second layer. Did you do it immediately after the first layer or did you let it cure first?

It seems the heat tape is really popping 21’s I see some 45’s wrapped but I don’t think I’ve seen many 67’s or 90’s wrapped.

Is it more advantageous on the smaller engines and a detriment to the larger ones?

There’s boats out there that have them on. Personally it helps the heat race boats stay on the pipe if you go thru someone’s wash you will stay running on the pipe for the most part and not slow down. It helps maintain the pipe very hot helps the engine with power and burn fuel as well.

I’m not close to mine right now but if you go to the plumbing department and asl for the silicone repair tape they’ll have it in many colors.  It’s used as a temporary repair for water leaks.

I was finally able to wrap some other pipe, one for my 90 rigger and 2 for my twin SGX with Mac84's. I did double layers. Hopefully i can test them next week.

As many pointed out, wrapping the pipe keeps heat in and prevents the cooling effect of spray and cold air. The only warning is that the exhaust duct needs to be cool. That's where the charge that the pipe pulls out of the cylinder is when the piston is at bottom dead center. This will be pushed back into the cylinder just before the exhaust closes, supercharging the engine. Lots of experiments have shown that if this mixture is hot, it encourages detonation and generally reduces power. The cool exhaust duct works the same as an intercooler on a supercharged engine.

Just a thought can wrapping the pipe disturb the pipes harmonics?

It doesn't affect the harmonics, but as the exhaust gasses are retain more heat, the pipe will act as if it's shorter. Then again the additional heat is able to return a stronger pulse.

Lohring, with this you mean that the header shall not be wrapped?

Really high power engines with a divided or triple exhaust ports should have an exhaust passage that looks like the one pictured below. I think a lot of our ringless engines with ears on the exhaust would benefit. That's the area that should be water cooled. With a more conventional header I would usually water cool the exhaust flange and maybe the header if it falls into the bore x 2 length.
