I forgot to mention electrical outlets - can't have too many. I have them every 4 ft. along the walls and one in the middle of the island. I used to spend my life tripping over extension cords!

Yup, Rich got that right. I have duplex outlets every 3 feet along the equipment walls & double duplex every 2 feet at work benches. They are broken up on 3 seperate circuit breakers with a breaker for lighting & a 220V for the compressor. All in a sub panel feeding from the main breaker panel. Also there are lights under all the shelves & cabinets overhanging benches, they were not on in my pics & 2 overhead lights were blocked by the open garage door. Had to step out of shop to get it all in the pics (taken at night). When I took those pics I had about 4 projects going at once, hence the 2 tons of clutter everywhere! :D

There are 5 more boats you can't see. Well actually you can see the top of the next scale boat in the "wall of speed" pic. And if you look real close in the back right corner of the shop the record holding Winston Eagle hangs "semi-retired" (ready to come out at a moments notice). The Dewalt sport 40 in same pic now belongs to Ted McKay & it is on it's way to him B)

Ok guys heres what im working with. We just bought this house two months ago, it has a fairly good size one car garage BUT it also has a decent size shed out in the back yard. Because of the shed I am able to put all of the crap (i.e., lawnmower, mountain bikes, dirt bikes, yard working equipment and everything else that doesnt belong in my RC boat workshop and that will help with the clutter. the Garage is going to be dedicated to nothing but RC Boats. I am a bit of a neat freak, meaning everything has a place and should be in its placed when not used, so organiztion and layout are crucial to me.

the first picture shows the "brick wall" portion of the work space, you can see i have my scroll saw sitting on top of a stool. well right on that wall is a set of outlets and also the switch for the huge exhaust fan mounted right above the space. I want to build a small workbench (maybe 2x4) along that wall only for mounting the scroll saw and belt sander on each end of the table top for nothing but a cutting and sanding area as I do alot of this.

this is the area where I have my belt sander temp. set up. The aircompressor is a must and will stay where its at, ( havent hooked it up yet though), however next to the comperessor, there is a gas line that was stubbed out with a quick connect and valve for future use, im thing of putting a small space heater there just for conveinence.

this is the next section of the shop. The gigantic Tool box has to go somewhere, so it looked like a good spot for it. unfortunately it takes up alot of room, room that I was wanting to use for built work benches....

you can see the sad little building table that I have. I just threw it together and stuck a pre made counter top on it. It works great, but it needs to be about twice the length and have a better way of supporting it. The large frame i constructed out of 2x4 and 1x4 is bulky and not efficient.

a look at the current 'but not for long' lighting. two four foot flourescents aint gonna cut it. Im gonna stuff as many 8 foot lights as I can into this space.

I definately think it has potetnial, but kinda at a loss as to placement of some of the things I want to do. Im not in a huge hurry or anything, because it is semi functional right now, but I want something more permanent.

what do you think?

~James

I have approval from the Boss to do the entire flooring with checkerboard tile :D thats probably gonna be first on the to do list.

James,

I had a shop nearly identical to the one picutred when I lived in St. Louis. When I moved to Memphis 2 years ago I was going to go the garage route. I'm kind of a neatnick too. The down side of the garage idea is sometimes you need the overhead door open for ventilation, etc. I know several people in this situation and on a breezy day you would not believe the crud that wanders into the shop in just a few minutes. I'm pretty handy at messing up mine without Mother Nature's help. Just a thought.

I bit the bullet and had an addition (18 x 20 ft) built on the house with separate heat/air. Cost about $22K. Extravigant? Maybe. But I'm single, un-attached and worth every penny!

James-

You're basically starting with what my shop was before it became the shop, a 1 1/2 car garage. FIRST thing you should do is buy a pad of 1/4" graph paper, accurately measure out the floor dimensions & start planning the layout in scale. You'll be surprised how mant times you'll change your mind as to layout, placement, etc. & it's ALOT easier to change on paper. B)
