gas tunnel speeds

what kind of speeds is expected, from these babys? I tested mine today and while I thought it was a total handful , and tearing up the pond , my gps said 49 mph. I better check the batteries in that thing. I still have much more tweaking to do , but I thought it was hauling the mail
 
Sounds about right - 50mph to 55mph. Doesn't sound like much, but they sure look impressive at that speed!
 
I took second place with my Ossi at the World Champs. I only had 6 runs on the boat prior and was going through the usual tunnel hull setup routine before I got there, and spent 2 more full days at the races in open water getting it to handle right, and to find the right CG, lower unit heigth / angle, and prop match. I found the sweet spot but my engine was running like a dog until some nice fellows from the local area (Gas cat racers, not tunnel hull racers) gave me some tips to get the horse power and rpms needed to make the boat come alive. In heat 1 of three the surprise was on me as the boat was faster than I wanted, it needed more down force and eventually blew over do to a heavy finger (my bad)! Wound up tweaking the thrust line and it was screaming at 1/2 to 2/3ds throttle. With a little more tweaking I am guessing 55 and up is possible maybe more on straight aways. I am only running a 260 also, a 30cc stroker kit could easliy go 60 +. Wind really was a big problem due to the high profile, it pushed the hull all over the course. Back in VA after test run 3, I decided it had to have stumble blocks. Drove terrible, would not turn at all, even small inputs, without hooking. Stumble blocks fixed that problem, made it handle sweet, just like an HTB 360. I blew over in one heat, and a tuned pipe dragging behind like an anchor made me spin out for 2 DNFs. Took 1st in round 3 with bad bad wind, otherwise I would have been the man. That's how it goes sometimes. Good luck with yours. We need to lobby for the class to run at other East Coast races. I plan on going to all of the IMPBA D12 Points Chase races, maybe the allure of the monster can help get us in the races. later, James Beasley
 
you're in the range, for just starting your setup process, imho. i agree 50-55 is about right for heat racing trim. with other boats, & rough water, it's a handful at those speeds. for fun running, 60 might be possible, but i don't think you could race that setup ;) . these speeds would be for a 'sport' 20 tunnel, a 'mod'/piped motor would be somewhat faster.

can you possibly, tell me more about your stumble blocks? size,location maybe some pics as I am a gas boater and not a tunnel savvy racer yet. broke a friggin shaft today, I sure hope this doesnt become an issue. thanks joe.......

Hey Joe, Sorry for the selay in responding but I am not on here regular. If your are running the Lawless lower twisted shafts are a problem. I got 6 runs out of my first one, my local friend got 9 out of his. Guys that ran them last year had similar issues. Fred Howe (the manufacturer) is a great guy and I intend to discuss wwith him some options for resolution of this matter. If he can fix it he will, he is a great guy. He told me up front at the purcahse that the shafts will twist if myou run to large a prop. Iused various props during my 6 runs, large and small. A 6518 is recommended for heat racing but it would not push my Ossi as it weighs to much (my opinion). I will work with that prop more on varied setups to try and reduce the stress on the flex shaft. Ref the stumble blocks, just pattern them after ones on the HTB hulls and install in similar locations and they will work properly. There are pictures of HTB hulls on this website and on the HTB website as well. later, James
 
On the Lawless lower, make sure you have the two piece cable / prop shaft (not the 1 piece from last year).. Replace the teflon tube with brass.. Lastly, each run, grease with Prather cable grease. This should help in reducing the broken shaft issue..
