Hey guys/gals. I used to be heavy into 1/10th scale off road racing but gave it up since my track closed. My parents have since moved into a lake front house, and I was thinking a nitro boat would be a blast when I visit. From my limited research, the Kyosho heatwave seems to be a good buy. It has a .18 motor, and weighs 1750 grams. I was also looking at the 1/12th scale Miss Bud, but I want to be able to turn left. I want a boat that goes around 30mph, but so far I havent been able to get any hard facts on the Kyosho.

I have all of my radio gear from my R/C car, so an RTR isn't a must. Any other suggestions?

TIA

Ok... I was looking for pretty much the same thing, Ron advised me to stay away from the miss bud, said it wasn't the best boat.

don't know much about the kyosho

I ended up with a cen aqua jet, it has a .16 and i have been told it can go 30, but i haven't had a gun or gps on it... I have been very happy with it, and i believe you can get it non RTR

My take is from the perspective of someone who sells electric and nitro and runs mainly electric

The advice you recieved is correct the bud is a dud 25mph - you can improve it but it is a heavy boat

NAMBA has a .12 class and thee baots are very fast

We sell .12 hulls - a mono and we are about to do a .12 rigger - these are very fast and relatively cheap - the mono is a 40+ mph boat the rigger we will have to see - these are the cheapest 40 mph boats you can buy

Your other option is to go electric and do Limited Sport Hydro - these are scale hulls running a 700BB motor - these are an inexpensive way into one of the most popular racing classes and are 40 mph boats - the other benefi is virtually no maintenance and they are welcome at any pond as they do not have the noise issue to deal with

I am not really interested in racing as much as recreational use. But you have def sparked some more interest in the electrics. I was under the impression that to go fast, you gotta use gas. All my current R/C gear is electric so that also makes sense.

Batteries,do you want to charge them all day or run a boat,if you want a fun little boat to have fun with, check out a nitro Hammer they run good and come ready to run, pull start all you need is a glow ignighter and fuel.check out towerhobbies.com

I don't think that the Kyosho Heatwave is being made any more so you're out of luck there.

Give us an idea of the price range that you are looking at, it helps a lot in us giving you advice. This site is not sponsored by anybody like a magazine or particular manufacturer so you will get honest opinions in here.

A side note for us CEN Racing boat owners. They do make a lot of stuff for Kyosho! Look at the motors and driveshafts for instance! Look familiar? I about had Kittens when the CEN rep told me that after I was dissin' Kyoshos on another site!

Mike Z. is coming out with a .12-sized version of John Finch's Wild Thing mono, a boat that could be a fast, great handling boat.

My track closed too. :( But I always liked boats better anyway. Cars were simply more convenient to race, but the maintenance and parts were a killer. If the house is on the lake it is probably a larger body of water. I would get the largest mono I could afford - at least a .45 size. You don't want to be relaunching a stuffed or flipped boat all day, and monos are a blast in rough water even at lower speeds.

There are still a few local places that have the heatwave in stock. I am looking to spend less than $300 on the boat alone. The lake they live on is really more like a big pond, so bigger isnt necessarily better.

Hi

Even though they can be painful I would say look at a 21 mono. Pretty quick and reasonably forgiving. If it were up to me for a shameless plug look for a good second had tunnel and have some real fun.

Bottom line it doesn't matter what you get welcome to the brotherhood of boaters. New blood always welcomed, which is more than can be said for a lot of RC fields.

Hey Shane...welcome aboard!

I'm a die hard nitro junky, but even us nitro guys have to respect this kind of e-power....(right click and 'save as')

My $.02? To get speed comparable to nitro, you are going to dump a bunch of bucks into batteries, high end speed controllers and motors, chargers...etc.

True, they are probably cheaper in the long run, less maintenance, quiet and all...but I like smoke and noise!

Figure this...how many batteries would it take to spend an afternoon at the pond? Even if you have a field charger, you'll need at least two or three sets. Have you seen the prices on the high end batteries? WOW!

An afternoon with a nitro boat? Bring a gallon of fuel...$20-$30...and probably bring some back home.

I'm not trying to steer you away from electrics (I've seen some incredibly fast ones), and I'm not trying to stir anything up with the "Sparkys" on this board...I just feel that a beginning boater would be happier with the price/performance ratio of a nitro boat.

Like I said...just my $.02.

Here's my two cents if you listen close to that vidio you can here how fast the power drops off on electrics, iv had them there good for two or three minuts thats it,you need atleast 14cells to go fast, then sit and recharge and sit andsit and sit,id rather refuel and go.nitro the only way for me. sorry electric guys just my opinion. :)

gotta chip in with PJ and Dale also......ive done both and like nitro alot better. if you want to save up for a bit and have a really GREAT boat, fast/good handling/well made/looks cool, get a Speedmaster .21 hull, Speedmaster hardware, used .21 engine [isnt there a guy selling some MAC's on here right now?], and you're rc car radio gear. trust me, you wont be dissapointed.

What about the megatech wicked angel? They advertise it as being 35mph+ out of the box  It seems to me that since the kyosho has a .18 it should be faster but it weighs about 600 grams more than the megatech.

Which brand is easier to upgrade/get parts for?

the name megatech is synonimous with crap. lol. seriously though, it is. it wont cost much more to buy a nice hull/hardware and then use your RC car motors/batts/charger/ESC/radio gear. take a look at finedesign.com, bbyracing.com, dpileisuresports.com, and fastelectrics.com

Stay far far away from megatech, made a mistake and bought one of there m-16s one time. guy at lhs recommended it for a tmaxx. 4 tanks later, bearing went out, never did get it to hold a seal in after 5 sets.

they sent me a new one, and same thing.

NOW if your like me and some of the others, you will not be happy for long with a RTR boat.

best thing, get a hull, and go from there. eather nitro or electric. But build it yourself, and you will be much happier with a good hull and good hardware.

Thanks for all the replies! A guy at a local shop pointed me towards a GP Top Speed Tunnel hull. It looks pretty good and I can get it for $280. Thoughts?
