I always thought the skdaddle was a copy of a Hallett. Guess Someone told me wrong . Great history anyway.

It may well have been. I am working from memory Bob - that boat was cloned by many and the SK Daddle may have indeed been copied from a Hallett. I believe Sanger Boats came up with that basic boat, going from memory from the early 70's when I worked at Fresno Boats which also cloned their version. I don't know the Hallett hull history. The clone that Fresno Boats built came from a Sanger hull that was raced by Sam Kurtovich #308. Sam had a falling out with Jack at Sanger and allied to Fresno Boats for his drag racing.

I have an uncle that's been in the drag boat business since the 60's, I'll ask him about it to be sure - he will know. Now you've got me wondering. I'll let you know what he says.

Thanks for the info.

Sanger Boats History

Bob, I talked to Uncle and he confirmed the Sanger as original. That being said, I looked at the Hallett drag boats. Looks to be exactly what the Dumas SK Daddle was fashioned after. The transom was a bit taller on the Hallett when compared to the Sanger. These fiberglass models look more like the Sanger than a Dumas Ski Daddle to me. Not that it really matters. :)

Thanks for sharing sir!

Sanger Boats History

I was involved in the boat building biz back in the early 70s.
I worked for a fg sailboat mfg in Costa Mesa. We had a lake boat mfg in the neighborhood, I cant remember the name but it was a small operation but they built a beautiful 18 or 19' HP jet boat. I always wanted back then but couldnt afford it.
When I started running rc boats then I built a plug and mold for a 36" donzi like boat and also made a mold off of my sk20. I had built a skdaddle earlier in the late 60s but never ran it. I would like to hear what you find

thanks for the update.
Ask your uncle if he remembers the boat builder in Costa Mesa. They had a full size boat on a pedestal in front of the building. It was a very small operation. The boat was a jet very sharp looking. I am very sure it was Horizon.

^^^ I'll ask him if he remembers. A drag boat history link came up on Youtube last week and I watched it. Some great stuff.

Have a look:

There were many boats out there back then. Hondo built a great version of the Sanger, they took it to the next level with something called the XH511 runner bottom. They put a ~24" wide runner down the keel and skirted the chines to make it essentially a type of dual tunnel hull.

Sanger and Hondo were the most numerous hulls at the drags in California back then in the flatbottom classes.

Just a little more about Dumas Sk boat kits, they where patterned after the SK Hallett.

Now for Flatbottom bubble deck V drive boats, was said to be built for pleasure ( river runner, skiing),
Drag boat, and circle track racing.
I have read that if the engine was driven from the Flywheel it was made the drag, ski, pleasure.
If it was driven from the crank damper then it was design for circle /oval racing. But remember I'm no expert20210222_112803.jpg

I had a SK Daddle 20 back in the day with a K&B Veco .19 in it. That was the one I splashed and made some fiberglass replicas from. The one I ran was one of the fiberglass clones.

The Veco .19 had a T03 transistor heat sink mounted to the head for cooling - no water pickup or water jacket.

TOO LATE TO UPDATE MY ORIGINAL POST CLAIMING THE DUMAS SK DADDLE WAS FASHIONED AFTER A SANGER - IT WAS INDEED FASHIONED AFTER THE HALLETT HULL.

Hi Steve it's all good as most all look alike. I own a 1976 Terry Frahs and from below the deck they all look alike the deck is the visible difference, at least to the untrained eye LOL

I have a 1969 Mandella . And yes they pretty much all look the same from that era .

Oh yeah, no self-mutilation going on here. :) But, real history is good and I wanted to clarify for others. There were a few originals, such as the Hallett's and Sanger's and lots of clones like the Hondo's and others.

The history is fascinating. I watched some Youtube videos a week or so so ago, of some Allison and Rolls Royce powered front engine 3 point rigs, probably from the 50's era. A few of them had what looked like Chrysler 392 Hemi's in them as well. Great stuff. Those 12 cylinder monsters sound sweet.
