Guys,

Found some old (8 years) Dupont 580S / 582S polyurethane enamel clear coat.. Haven't opened the can yet, but still sounds useable. Question is, will this work with 65% fuel? Or am I wasting time, go out and buy new clear coat/activator?

What ya think???

Mark..

Open the can and paint a peice of scrap wood and see if it stands up to the fuel . Best way to find out is before you paint the boat. Scott

Scott, wise words that were forgotten. Took a look at the clear coat, still looks good. Whip'd up about 10cc worth and layed it over a test piece. Will find out in a day or two.

Be careful with old clearcoats, especially from Dupont. Open the can & look down thru the clear, if it isn't absolutely crystal clear (like water) don't use it as it could and probably will yellow on the boat when it cures. Saw this happen to a guy on a scale boat a few years ago, man was he bummed out! :(

Don,

The can was opened and it did appear to be very clear.. Right now, there are three test pieces with the clear coat on it. Last night, the first two items had a cure time of 24hrs.. Did not see any "yellowing" on them. I'll look closer tonight when I get home from work. A "fuel test" is currently scheduled for tonight. If all goes well, then Wednesday will be used to clear coat the boat. Since my wife has paint experince ( before moving from Michigan, she painted gauges used in F-14s, F15s and even the space shuttles), I made sure she looked closely at it. She did not see any issues with it. But thanks for advising of the risk of yellowing....

Speaking of being bummed out with clearcoats......I made the mistake of using some old Hobbypoxy clear epoxy paint on my beautiful, bright, colorful, red white and blue wood Dumas DV20 about 2 yrs ago. I didn't know that epoxy clear by nature is yellow :( . It yellowed all of the clean white and bright colors effectively ruining my nice paint job. This summer, I'm planning on sanding it all back down to my fiberglass coating and redoing the paint job. I'll cover it with automotive clear this time!

Brad and I use ppg clear 2021 this is a three part clear. mixing 4oz clear 1oz hardner 1oz reducer. this will handle 65 percent nirto and it does"nt yellow this is the best clear we have used.

Well, after speaking to the CFO of OB Nut Racing team, she stated to buy new, throw out the old. Hopefully the local NAPA carries PPG.. If not, then it'll be a nice drive to pic up the clear coat...

Mark.

NAPA carries Sherwin Williams, you'll need to seek out a PPG supplier. Like Dave said the PPG DCU-2021 Concept clear is the shiznit!! :p

Well, here's the result of the Dupont test.. 48 hours cure time for clear coats. One drop of 65% and within 15 secs, it was bubble'n  Don't think that will be used ;)

Off to find some PPG :D

Thanks for the input... B)
