Building a 67 Bud

We use to have Miss Supertest at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto. Was there for years now it's gone? She seemed to be in good shape!

A refit would be doable $$$

Hope she is in good hands!

There hasn't been any word on either the 71 or 77 Atlas hulls that I've heard. That being the case, it probably is unless Harry has heard something different. At least the 71 had a tarp over it when I was there last, the 77 was just out in the weather on it's trailer

The 77 is rumored to be one of the next restoration projects but we will have to see. As for the 1971, it is still outaide under a tarp. It is not however, the real 1971 Atlas. It is actually the Miss Madison of the same era that had been repainted to look like the Atlas for the San Diego race site.

This is not the Gold Cup winning Atlas, but the boat that replaced it in 1972.

This boat was not in the movie. In the movie they

1. Repainted the Savair's Mist to be the Miss Madison

2. Repainted the old Tempus to be the Miss Budweiser

3. Repainted the Pay N Pak's Lil buzzard to be the aAtlas. (Actually the repainting was done when Bill Muncey got the boat with all the Pay N Pak stuff from Heerensperger in 1976. Atlas used it as a display boat.)

4. Put the Notre Dame name on the 67 Budweiser

5. Repainted the Savair's Probe/Miss Burien as the Cat's Pride

A couple of others that I can't remember without watching the movie again.

Couple more final layout pics. Will powder coat the turn fin bracket and support bar white later on to blend it into the white hull sides.

I did the Fin is red P/C figured it'll act as a flag when she's upside down

Put some vinyl on the sponson decks to help me see her as I get some stick time running around the course.

Now what is the general rule when setting up these scales when using a hooked turn fin?

Figure we got some AOA going on with the hook.

Do ya try and keep the two at the same AOA ? Or is the turn fin kept at a AOA that follows the hull??

The AOA on the turn fin should be set at ZERO. You don't want the fin to lift or pull down on the right sponson except in the turns.

Thanks was thinking that was the correct setup! So line it up with the sponson AOA.OK!

Figured some of ya were involved B) There was a quick shot of some Scales in the closing scene. How much filming of the scales did they shoot and use?

The editing was quite good and hard to tell the difference. Figure Atlas grenading was a scale.

Is there a thread on the members involvement here?

My Green/head got torn down last night!

Seems Terry K found some issues with one of his, Rod rubbing bottom of case, and the tapered spacer for the flywheel was touching the bearings.

Mine a newer engine was fine figure! CMB must have addressed this,

But there was some flakes of chrome lining at the ports just hanging on, so they were removed.

They also change the head shim from 8 thou to a 4. All torqed up and good to go.

Actually, the Atlas was live footage from a Seattle SeaFair race where a real boat crashed, though I don't remember what year it was from. The Madison blowing up in Seattle was filmed with a model and the real 71 Madison, depending on where in the sequence the footage was. If I remember right, the only other model footage was the crash scene with the Town Club and Madison colliding.

Turn fin should be parallel to the bottom to start, make sure you're gonna be able to put a bunch of angle in the strut, that's what Rudy's boat needed.

Pitty only got 4 runs in today! Before having to leave early! Next time it's poor cell service at the Pond!

New strut angle and running the Turn fin with the hull AOA was a good start, She kept the nose down a lot better then last time. I only blew over once :blink:

A few times the turn fin was the only part left holding her down! Wind was about 15-20mph lite ripple 1" surface

Losing the sponson ride tabs helped alot! No chime walking as she did.

Still running the Beveled sponson edge and I see no reason yet to rebuild the sponsons to plan 90 deg edge. Air build up under the hull from speed is not a issue from the down wind pass.

Add the wind on the up wind pass and she got a little nasty riding only on the turn fin a few times.

She's improved a lot since last run!

Allowed a movie crew to film here once! Low budget film! Never again! Took over the place and was a zoo! OK for crew to stay but no more Filming on the property! Handycams are ok!

Need me a Thunder boat (Miss Notell Motel)

Been on the set of the Black Stalion with Mickey Rooney, horse handler/groom! Mickey is a one in a million superstar Gentleman!!

They are running the 1967 boat across from our race in Chelan this weekend. I will take some pics and video for you.

Yes, I figured the people who ran the motel probably would not have approved of us painting in the room.

Our race is APBA. last race of the year, The Gold Cup. Chelan has a really wonderful little dowtown park where we run.

Another interesting little movie tidbit. The reason we got involved with the models was a result of this conversation between museum director David Williams and the movie folks.

Movie guy: We would like you to crash one of the boats for the movie.

David Williams: I am afraid we aren't going to be able to do that.

Movie guy: Why not?

Williams: What happens to the driver of the boat that crashes in your script?

Movie guy: He get's killed

Williams: That's exactly why we aren't going to crash one for you. Now we do know these guys who make racing models of the boats.......
