The rudimentary heat treating spelled out in Marty Davis's prop papers really works well.I've done the same thing . 550 deg in the oven fpr 2 hours and an ice water quench ...WAY tougher !!! :)

For Octura Props the heat treat formula we use is:

1450 for 1 hour and quench in water.

Then 600 for 1 hour and let cool by itself. Makes the prop very hard but not brittle.

Brett English is using our heat treating on his big twin with zero prop failures. He was going through a TON of props before.

This is a service that I turned over to Norm Doerr who can do this for you for a very inexpensive price.

Yes I was foolish to run it before it was heat treated.

But I could not help my self. Was not sure if the eng would even run it.

Dropped the boat in the water with the radio in one hand and the boat in the other and up it popped and went strait to pipe like always. Reved so fast could not catch up with the needle. Pop goes the plug.

Mark is on to some thing here. Just glad to test the new stuff for him.

Now if I can just keep up with the boat

Have had that happen twice.

Tim

Well I was pulling 7.5" of prop at 10 1/4 " of pipe and the boat hooked and stooped.

This is what I found when it got back to shore.

Like I said if you aren't pushing the edge you are just going around in circles.

David
tim, i think i remember 1 of them  . seems it was something about my sundowner dumping right in front of you...... the coolest part was, we both fixed our hulls, came back to race sunday & then ended up in a KILLER runoff against each other. a weekend of .21 rigger racing i'll never forget ;) . can't wait for this year's races to start. see ya at the pond!!

not a rigger, but after a little bump in turn 2 the whip went airborn, rotated and came down sideways. Turn fin caught the water first and tore the left sponson clean off. She is all repaired now after extensive surgurey.

These photos come from the 2008 NAMBA Nationals in Greeley, CO. I believe the photo credit actually goes to Jerry Dunlap for these. The only boat I'm certain of is Lenny Blake's gas mono on the outside with the rudder kicked back. Maybe not bad day at the pond, but perhaps leading up to being a bad day.

The orange Phil Thomas Sport 40 is mine. Alfred Lanza started the whole crazy mess and his is the boat driving over Alan Terry's Blue sport. The orange boat did a complete barrel role landed upright and won the heat.

Jerry also took the pic in my avatar.

They told me that concrete would win over fiberglass everytime but I didnt believe them until I tried it myself.
