"I enjoy an explosion as much as the next guy(ok,more)but you guys may want to be shure that the fan motor wont ignight the fumes......."

Nah, no problem, at least with an actual paint gun. There is no propane or other flammable propellant like in aerosol spray cans & even those don't light too well unless you spray directly across an open flame since the propellant molecules disperse instantly once released from the can. I've actually sprayed straight laquer thinner right thru the fan I've been using when cleaning a gun out. ;)

Don,
Thanks for all the info on this exaust project.

Do you think this could suck up some airborne dust from a shop? Even using a vacume I still get more than I would like.

Mike
I see no reason it wouldn't, again go with a high cfm rating. I found one at McMaster-Carr that is like what I used but stronger - #2213K36 on page 569.

I use a super simple device when sanding indoors...a cheap box fan ($14 at Wal-Mart) with a 20" x 20" AC filter taped to the back side. Set it in a corner, turn it on and forget about it. It picks up dust while circulating the air.

I like the idea, but for painting the fan can stir up dust into the air & since it's not discharging outside it's not doing much for the fumes, which are toxic.

UPDATE- well the 150 cfm exhaust fan is ok for the airbrush but not strong enough for the regular stuff. I found a 10" 665 cfm fan (#4WT44) at Grainger's for $63 (they do mail order too) which should work much better. Going to take a drive this afternoon to check it out.

Looks like I'm not the only one with a wife that hates paint fumes! :p I have a work shop in the basement and took out the window that was in it. In it's place I mounted a piece of plywood on each side of the frame and installed a kitchen / bath fan in to it. Mine is a 150 cfm too! It's probably the same unit. The 150 cfm is big enough for me, but it's probably because my room is alot smaller than your garage. It doesn't take as much time to change the air in my work shop compared to yours. It's realy nice to turn on when sanding as well as painting. Not to mention that I can smoke down there with out the wife ever knowing! B)

Let us know how the new fan works!
