I have a much easier solution to all of this.

MERGE IMPBA and NAMBA so that we have more strength in numbers.
AGREED !!!!

Anyone that knows me knows- If I have said it once , I have said it a thousand times-

We all do the same thing-

IMPBA/NAMBA

GAS/ELECTRIC

NITRO/GAS

WHY cant it be a united front ????

HOLY CRAP. A MIND READER!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE!!
I personally think that if merged, this union /merger would provide a better medium , venue for the Hobby . Guys...nobody is getting younger here , time to atract younger participants to the Hobby though an easier process or face extinction IMHO . The 5 bouy deal in my opinion is a no brainer ...the Half Mill ( actually a 3/4 mill by the time you go around the 1/2 mill bouy) adds new opportunities and excitement from my vantage point , and I'm a semi GEEZER !!I'm up for just about any thing that will make it different and exciting ...just my observation , no dissing of any kind ...just stay TFOOFM way !!!!!

Marty's been trying to merge the sanctioning bodies for about 10 years now that I know of.

Is it or will it ever happen? I doubt it but this is getting OT again.

If you haven't noticed by now, the 5 buoy turns is now an option approved last week at the IMPBA BOD meeting.

We set the five bouy turns up in Atlanta today. Everyone seemed to like the new course!

The Charleston Model Boaters voted today to use the 5 buoy setup for the Fall Nationals in October. Biggest challenge will be setting them up in 25' deep water.

Ahh, that's easy. I remember days back setting up the NAMBA course in the old Springfield pond where it was over 50 feet deep on the right side and almost 100 feet on the left. Nothing like using 500 feet of rope just to do one side of the course. You lost a boat there and it was gone for good.
Glad to see you guys doing the 5 buoy turns, it has been excellent so far in D12. B)

Our club Pres raised what seemed some very valid issues I havent seen posted here:

1) If you have the 50 pt penalty for bouy cutting, more bouys means if you miss one you might miss several and lose ALOT of points.

2) Getting back onto the course at speed is harder if you do cut a bouy (that made me THINK - as a new driver, I have a problem w/old bouy 2 sometimes and can just see me hitting the extra bouy between 2 & 3 on a 5 bouy course).

I thought these points seemed valid, especially for new, inexperienced drivers.

1- don't cut the buoys.

2- see answer number one.

Just pokin' fun. :D

But seriously, even though you you might find it hard to believe so far we have seen a drastic reduction in cuts and/or hits since switching to the 5 buoy corners. :)

In NAMBA , a buoy cut is a lap penalty

3 buoy cuts in a heat and its a DQ ...

The only exception is in Offshore-

an offshore buoy cut is 100 pt deduct.

I feel the same way about half mill as the five bouys. Half mill would make it easier to get to the start line at the horn...which to me is not what the hobby is about. Being able to mill your boat at full mill and be at the the start line when the horn goes off is part of the art of driving these things... If everything is made easy for the drivers, the only thing left will be the person that has the deepest pockets, having the fastest boat.

I have seen faster boats get out driven by a better driver with a slower boat. I am sure all of us have. If it is made too easy to be at the start, and too easy to make it through the turns, then what is next??

Funny thing is, when I first read this post, I had thought the same thing that someone else posted about the pool noodles. Is that going to be our next step in turns, to make them out of pool noodle??

I understand the frustation in getting a boat hit or run over. I have been there with a freshly painted boat during its first time in an organized race. But I still feel that being able to make the turns, and time the start, is part of what people should learn to do. It is part of "being a good driver."

RC boat racing should not be plug and play... I know a better driver will always have an advantage. But if we make it too easy for the bad drivers, then that has taken away some of what the better driver has earned with his/her experience.

I agree there would be less accidents with 5 buoy turns, and I agree that it would be easier to make the start with half mill, but is that what is wanted and needed in this hobby?? Nothing is going to eliminate the accidents, and from where I have raced, I have a hard time believing a 5 buoy turn will bring accidents down to just one a race. Shoot, I see more folks run over dead boats than that at a single race...let alone making it through a turn.

Just my 2 cents.

Sean
Well said Sean,

I agree with what you think on this. Also some clubs don't have the $ to start putting an extra 4 bouys out to be

replaced at some time during a race day ,or wk. end. Our club is one.

So Mark and Sean, are you implying that those posting on how much it has improved things and the reduction of carnage in the corners are not being factual? Have either of you two raced a 5 buoy turn yet? Sean, you said- "I agree there would be less accidents with 5 buoy turns" so what's the big deal with you being against a 5 buoy corner? Mark since you posted "Well said Sean, I agree with what you think on this" the same question goes to you as well. Not singling you guys out but rather trying to understand this line of thinking you two share here. And as for the costs, that don't wash, you make it sound like these are $50 buoys. And BTW- 5 buoys do not make it "easier", it makes people cut an honest corner and if that results in more boats still out there RACING then what is wrong with that?

Maybe I'm not clear on sometihng so please clarify. With the speeds that we're not running at and many boats not being able to make a fast left once a cut is made, you could actually cut more than one buoy to get back on course.

Do you lose more than 50 points at a corner for not being able to get back outside the line fast enough?

For the past couple years I have run at least 3 races a season at IMPBA events (3 bouys) and quite a few races at home in Dist 3 NAMBA. (5 pin ) I like the 3 pin for tunnels that can change lanes at will. For the betterment of racing I believe the 5 bouy turn is prefferable. I know NAMBA and IMPBA are not about to merge but getting closer in rules may promote some clubs to put on some special races where east can meet west for real. I never have liked the lap penalty for a bouy cut but it does keep you away from them. As for the half mill, I run both ways every year and it makes no real difference. Gives you an opportunity to launch late and get into cycle. If you don't like it just go all the way around. The good starters are there in either format. Sorry for drifting off topic but this is the start of better racing and if IMPBA & NAMBA both move forward and share resources rather than putting up walls we all will benefit.

Norm, I'm all for challenging race courses and two different corners and or a Tri-oval (no left turns) would be fun and really test our skills.
