The stick is a no brainer. The throttle is on a ratchet, just let go and adjust the the 3rd channel.

Olly
nice thing about the throttle on the stick radio is you can also scratch your butt and still go as fast as you like. :D

On my 4PK I use both grip dials as mixture control, forward to lean down, dont get confused over which dial to use. The adjustment is done with the left thumb, I dont release the wheel when doing so. I have seen people who do! When I pit for people I read out their needle seeting from their display so they dont need to take their eyes off their boat. I know of a few people who use a set of the trim type buttons near the wheels for mixture adjustment.

Fellas,

I have a question and would like to get some input.

I dont use a 3rd channel on any of my boats. In thinking.. how do you guys use it..

Let me break it down.

Pistol users.. do you let go of the steering to adjust your mixture?

Two stick users.. do you let go of the throttle to adjust your mixture?

To the pistol user one would think you would have no choice but I suspect one might set up the D/R dial as a mixture.

In any case lets have your input.

Something about letting go of the steering that’s got me thinking! That just really sounds like a bad idea..lol No wonder I get wacked from time to time! lol.. KIDDING..
Grim, I have alot of respect for you guys that have never used 3rd channel mixture, and I only know a few.

How you get your boats ear tuned before each heat and run well is a mystery to me?

When I started boat racing, 13 years ago, 3rd channel needle was standard with the guys I raced with and

have never been without. Anyway , I use my thumb above throttle, on pistol grip radio, 3PK, and now 4Pk,

forward is lean. I even look at the nice screen , right in front of me from time to time , to see where my needle

numbers are.

I use my thumb.. Launch rich and lean out.. I record the number on the radio for the position.. and go back to that setting if the weather is similar.

Like many others on my 3PK, I use one thumb wheel for steering DR and the other for mixture on nitro boats. I've been considering using the third channel coupled with a gyro to adjust a canard as well on gas and electric boats. On the $15 thrift shop special RC sailboat I just bought, I thought of using my completely unsuitable pistol radio with the thumb wheel to control the sails and the wheel for steering. We'll see how that works.

I use a pistol grip and I use my thumb to adjust the needle. There's 2 buttons there so to avoid confusion on my part I have them both do the mixing I don't have to worry about which one I'm hitting.
This is what we do as well!!!.... ;)

Well how do you not go to lean on the needle ,I have never ran a third channel needle,I know there are corce and fine just dant know the difference.

Thanx Robert

Here is my thinking.. I would want a "dial" that mimics the feel of a clicking needle. I also would like to turn the dial in the same manner as a needle. CCW=Fat.. CC=Lean..

I already know I would not like a "digital" button feel.

Just thinking...

I use both two stick and

pistol radios so to me this makes more sense on a two stick. One could still steer the boat normally and "throttle" the boat with the needle. Im just not sure how that could be done "well" with a pistol.

I have more questions than I have answers now..lol

We leave throttle at full stick (rachet style) and generally drive the needle.

On both my 3PKS and 4PKS I moved my throttle trim over to the DT3 position (3 o'clock) and set the DT2 (9 o'clock) for third channel, up for rich and down for lean. Use your left thumb to lean or richen and never take either hand off of steering or throttle. :)

I have an old Futaba 2ch brown box that I coverted to 3ch. Need to pull the battery to access the third channel adjustment, usually do this on the back straight.

Thanks everybody for your input.. good enought!

Truth is I have no intentions of using a radio needle. Its just a good idea to have info like this.

HMMM, smells like clandestine market research to me..........

BTW, I do the same as Mr. Ferrette......I described it wrong in my previous post......

I use a Futaba 7C and just put it on auto-pilot.....rotate the 6th channel knob (lean clockwise) till just before the engine blows up..... :D :D :D

on my JR xs-3 i assign it to grip button A. use my left thumb to adj. rocker type switch, click foward for lean, back for rich. right hand never leaves the wheel. after watching it work on a boris meter & driving my boats, x number of clicks/pushes on the rocker=x amount of change. also gives me a digital readout in + or - numbers of how far i've moved it, in case i lose track of how thumb happy i've become :p ........
