I only want one cowl!!!!!

:(

Mike told me about his cowl locks back when I ordered a fuel cell from him, now I'm kicking myself for not getting them. On my PT SS45 I used the Aeromarine locks and it looks like one is going to be in the way of the rudder linkage, his wouldn't be.

Tony,
I'll try and get some pics of how I'm holding my Crapshooter45 cowl down. A couple titanium ball links from the RC car guys, a couple nylon ring clips and a couple O-rings. Very light weight and very secure, too.

Thanks. Brad.

Precious!

Tony,

I use small servo horns from old servos. get one that has 3 or four ears on it. cut off 2 of them, clean them up and i drill a little hole in each corner of the transon where the radio box starts. use 2 small s/s wood screws from dubro. and your done.

been using this for 6yrs, never a problem.

I have started leaning towards the method Chris described.

The aluminum angles descibed are a very clean installation.

If you like the o-ring idea then just slide a ring on the rear boom tube and mount the ball link in the cowl.

Tony, Others,

It isn't anything special or original, but this is what I'm talking about.

I've got to get a new digital camera. This freebie I got from SBC bites......

Thanks. Brad.

Brad, have you ran that boat with the o-rings? The reason I ask is that you have them pulling to the rear of the boat which can cause the cowl to slip back and come out up front. Most of the people I've seen have them pulling to the front to hold the cowl in.

I was wonderin' the same thing.................

Thanks to everyone I would like to see some pics of a set of Mikes mounted on a boat if anyone has one. I like the servo arm and the ball link/o-ring idea as well. Thanks for your efforts.. Tony J

John, Don,

They mostly pull straight down. In any case, the cowl fits well enough it can't slide back far enough for the cowl lip to let go up front. The reason for the placement of the ring binders is the plywood corner braces on the inside of the tub make for a good place to run a screw into. The screw goes in the side of the tub and into these blaces and does not break out on the inside of the engine compartment. In the future, I may glue a small piece of plywood on the inside of the tub in the engine compartment, while doing the original build, to allow for these screws. The screws as well as the ball links are titanium, more for corrosion resistance than the weight, but they are considerably lighter than steel screws. The titanium screws and ball links can be bought at any LHS that carries RC car stuff.

Thanks. Brad.

Will it fit a Hummingbird???

Sorry I couldn't resist. I'll go back to my room now.

You cant. Atleast not from me. My father and I made it about 4 and a half years ago. he made a plug out of a big chunk of nylon, and then we made a mold using the plug. We used the mold to pull three cowls from it, then 3 years later he says he cant find the mold (threw it out) and doesnt have time to make another. Of the three cowls, the first one was way to thin and light.. it got trashed. the second one is what you see on the boat. and the third sold on ebay 3 years ago, for 8 bucks  I really wish we still had the molds.... it was a nice cowl!

That is one of the first outriggers I ever made years ago, it didnt work to well and it is now on my "Wall Of Dead Wood" I destroyed the cowling, trying to make it fit another design about a year later....

(sorry, probably WAY more info than you wanted, but thats the story behind the cowl...)

P.S. we got the basic shape from the old BBY riggers that Randy Naylor used to make, he used to make them in fiberglass and may still have some, you could give him a shout.

Well Tony, what do you think so far?

BTW, congrats on becoming the new D-2 Director!
