Hi, first custom boat, 2nd post on the forum. I recently purchased a 90% complete kit
Dumas Scarab 45"
- Hull and Deck (separate pieces)
- Some wood interior, crossbeams and supports I think.

Need some guidance on where to begin, what steps to take and in what order..
Any links to videos etc.. I know there is a wealth of knowledge here.
attached are the pics I have so far. It's in rough shape, I think..... I don't really know.
It doesn't have any holes in the hull so I guess that's better than a sinking boat...

Cool.. I built one of those MANY years ago. I would join the hull and deck first. Use Polyester resin and q cells to do this..

Take as much time as needed to get it straight too..

First of all, I don't believe Dumas ever produced a version of the Scarab model with the hull and deck un-joined. All Scarab models shipped with hull & deck factory pre-joined.

I'm pretty sure what you have there is a Dumas, Deep Vee-60 CF, which means "Competition Fiberglass" (Model No. 1420). It is also 45" long. These are pretty cool deep vee kits.

I've attached a copy of the original Dumas Competition Deep Vee-60. Take your time and carefully read through it.

Put a 90/1.01 in it. I had one back in the 1980s. Had an ops 90 in it. Very stable and great running boat. I won many races with it in F mono. About 5 mph slower than the fastest boats but it handled better.

Thank you. I had to postpone my hobbies due to work related purposes.
Back at it this holiday season.
I am going to give it a go and I'll post any results.

You were correct, found the original papers / instructions. Dumas Depp Vee 60 for sure. With that said, I found ZERO builds of this model on youtube. A few rebuilds / ipgrades but nothing from scratch or day 1. So I think I will do that ( to the best of my ability)

My goals this coming week.
1. Make a boat stand.... I followed this, but made mine 30"L x 7.5" W x 6"h ( )
2. Clean out the hull and deck (remove any debris)
3. Add a wooden transom plate to reenforce the back hull wall for when I add the engines

going for a realistic look vs. speed

4. Figure out a way to secure the Deck to the Hull.
How do I hold them together in order to seal with epoxy?
Do people use bar clamps ?? I'm thinking yes..

After this kit sat in a basement for many years untouched, the deck had a bend and wired curve in the wrong direction like something had been sitting on it.

I used a few blocks of wood and painters tape to set a better bend. I'm gonna let this rest for a few days.
Transom is setting up and hopefully I can force a better bend in the deck.

Hi:

Hull looks pretty good (at least from the angle in the photo).

Yeah, it was not uncommon on those original (polyester fiberglass) Dumas deep-Vee kits to exhibit warping in the deck section, especially after years of storage. All you can do is tape ( or secure) the deck to the hull, best possible. Let sit.

Make sure to follow the Dumas instructions. I believe the wood transom plate is laminated after hull & deck are joined. Once joined, then you can carefully sand inside transom surface of any imperfections.

Take your time when joining deck to hull. Carefully apply small pieces of fiberglass tape (maybe 1” long),with resin, along inside seam to tack deck to hull. Afterwards apply single strip of tape to one side of hull. You can use a long paint brush to apply resin (or tape a metal acid brush to a long dowel, so as to reach way up to bow

Also I would configuring this hull for inboard engine, it will run better. It would run very well with a new .45 marine engine
