I dodged the draft in 1968. My method was enlisting in the Marine Corps. 50+ years later my service was never about protecting this country. I was fortunate to only come back from Viet Nam with mental scars. Many of my generation suffered much worse.
Our endless wars are justified by shoving democracy down the throats of countries who don't want or need it. This from people who don't even trust their own vote. 20 years and 2.26 trillion plus all the human carnage for what? There is no easy or totally right way to end things now.
If they won't sign a real declaration of war or send their own sons (now daughters) then we shouldn't be there.
I have nothing but respect for John McCain, his life was dedicated to our country not for personal gain. Something trump could never understand.
To disrespect a true hero is unforgivable. To follow a moron well you can't fix stupid. Then again covid is fixing stupid every day.
Mic
Mic,
Somebody hasn't been paying attention over the last twenty years. It hasn't been about nation building. It hasn't been about the oil. It has been over where the war on terror will be fought. In that decision, there are two option: Over here, or over there. For the last twenty years, it has been over there. Without exception.
It has been the desire of the several presidents to have the US withdraw from Afghanistan, and, without proper context, the majority of the American electorate has agreed with them. Fortunately, cooler heads have thus far prevailed and this emotional desire has never been coddled to. While the Trump administration had a plan for withdrawing without leaving American lives, or the lives of those who have assisted us, in harms way, and without leaving billions of dollars of some of the latest military hardware in the hands of God knows who, this childish, impulsive, adamant-against-all-advice decision to just up and jerk us out with abandon has now surrendered that "over here or over there" decision to the hands of some of the most brutal savages on the planet. We've all seen how Biden has been willing to put American lives, livelihoods and quality of life in unmitigated jeopardy, all for the sake of erasing Trump's demonstrably successful legacy, and this is no exception. Politics over policy. Agenda over America. Always, with the Left.
And, now, we're seeing that the Taliban has drawn THEIR "red line in the sand". I'm betting they'll have more of a backbone than BHO had when he drew his. I'm also betting that Biden won't, and he'll only make excuses for the lives lost with the same shrug of the shoulders he'd dealt all the other justified criticisms with. What we really should do is plant about 100K troops back in Afghanistan and dare the Taliban to scratch even that first hair on an American head until WE decide when we are ready to turn the rest of the country over to them. And then, as we depart, it should be made abundantly clear that we have plenty enough conventional WMD to utter level the entire region, and, should even that first hair on an American head come to harm as a result of Taliban, ISIS, Al Qaida, or whoever's misguided behavior, there won't be anything left of Afghanistan worth fighting for within 48 hrs. But, I'm doubting Biden has the stomach to carry through with that.
Thanks. Brad.
