walt tank needs repair

Is Wait BARNEY still making tanks ? He made me one a few months ago sprung a leak
needing some repair.

Walt is done and he transferred the business to Bruce Jacobs who is on IA. Bruce currently has a medical situation which may be cleared up soon. I along with others are waiting for him to announce that he is open for business.

My SS tank I made sprung a leak,cleaned the area well with acrylic paint thinners
Some acid or phosphoric soldering flux applied,an 80 watt or bigger soldering iron with a 1/4"
to 5/16" flat/angled tip,,solder runs like a beaut,didn't leak again

From my own experience, spot to be soldered, rough it up good. Then, Rough it up like you hadn't done any...
Probably better to use a softer solder, NOT silver bearing solder. Because the solder will need to be slightly flexible. I always used acid flux. But, I think it wouldn't hurt to use some denatured alcohol. Or, better yet, Acetone. Inside and out.

Yup, clean it good, even a small wire brush will work, acid flux or acid core solder, clean tip of a good soldering iron or gun,, should flow easily..

I’ve actually thought about buying a small brake and start building tanks, I’ve built some with hand benders using brass sheet…

Anyone know or have a lead on what type of sheet metal is used to make the metal tanks ? Is it just plain coated steel or is it stainless sheet ?

I just used .010" thick cheap chinese staino,off fleabay lol,came in a small roll and I flattened it out,solders well.
I did my edge bends in a vice using alum angle as job guards,bends pretty easy,,added some criss x creases on top and bottom plates to stiffen them.Also drill the fuel tube holes a fair bit undersize,then push/bash a suitable nail/tapered punch through to size,so it gives a rolled edge hole,for better solder purchase.I also added 2 horizontal internal baffles in the pickup area to about 1/2 tank lenght.with a small gap on right side of tank side and vent gaps here and there.Worked well in a hydro

BRASS???.....Hell, why not just make them out of cast iron?....

We used to make our own for 1/2 A control line planes back in the 60's, and I thought it was tin....Dad brought some small sheets home from the shop at Buick for me, 'bout all I remember....lil' 2-3 oz tanks is all those Cox Thimble Drone TD 049 and 051's needed.

Tin or stainless, I would think. We used to make our own for 1/2 A control line planes back in the 60's, and I thought it was tin....Dad brought some small sheets home from the shop at Buick for me, 'bout all I remember....lil' 2-3 oz tanks is all those Cox Thimble Drone TD 049 and 051's needed.

Well, it was shim stock… flat sheets, and it was a twin .90 eagle, so weight wasn’t “that” critical..
never weighed them, but I’ll bet they aren’t too far off from steel tanks..
besides… not sure you can find anyone that builds tanks with a “pony” tank inside of them.. there are a few trick things done to them..

I actually still have that old eagle and the tanks,,, maybe I should weigh them against another set of tin tanks I have..
Might be interesting to see how much different they weigh ..

.008 K+S Tin is or was my go to.. easy to form and solder.. some of my tanks are over 15 years old now..

At the end of the day.. pull the tank and with some pickle oil wipe if off.. done!.. easy peazy!
