Ok... went through the village zoning laws.... determined I had to rotate my garage so it is now 22 wide and 28 deep with my workshop in the back. no biggie. Worst case I will have to make a tiny bump out for the boat trailer tongue but I think it will fit. Other than that It will be basically the same exact size just on the back not the side. I changed it to an interior door and no window. If I put the window on the back I would not be able to see it from the house and i'd be worried about someone breaking in. I can put a screen door on the interior door and open the garage door for air. and ill have an exhaust fan.

My big question is this. should I make it a workshop / getaway room? I don't have a basement or anything in my house and i'm kinda thinking it might be cool to have an old couch, area rug, stereo, tv all setup out there for myself and my son (we can get away from all the women).

what ya think? all workshop like previous drawings or more like the attached?

thanks

tom

What ever you put in there will get dirty! You can put a TV on the wall for background noise while working but if you think you will have a nice clean space to sit and "get away" I think you fooling yourself.

Tom: I'm a big fan of the "workshop with a getaway". I'm the only male in the house with my wife, two girls and even a female dog. My workshop is a former summer kitchen (12x20) in the basement complete with cupboards, sink and tile floor at one end. Carpet, TV, couch, bed and stereo at the other.

Warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It's known as "Dad's boat room", a place for me to have quiet time and watch whatever I want. While they watch "Trading Spaces" and "While you were out". I'm working on boats and watching Nascar or drag racing.

I'm convinced that no matter how bad things get at work. Keeping life in check at home can keep stress to a minimum. Basically, a little distance but not being too far away works real well for me.

Just an opinion.... This is however my second time around.

in my garage i have a tv and radio setup. we used to have a couch but we got rid of it  having a couch or lazyboy in your shop is the best thing you can ever do.

if you are like me, you wouldnt get up after you sit on the couch :D im guessing its nice if you have a lot of extra room.

My whole basement except for the laundry area is my place to escape. My wife rarely comes down there except to do the laundry but I do that if I'm down there. I have a small TV and a huge stereo to block out the wife yellin' and the dogs barkin'.

I'd slide the TV and entertainment center over to make room for the computer area and add more workbench space. You never have enough of that. I have 2 workbenches, an old Dining room table plus shelving and still don't have enough. I'm trying to make room for a 6-1/2 foot table that has been in the back of my truck since last fall.

I would go with the getaway also. I don't have my basement divided off but I have a table set up with tv and stereo close by. Not to mention my large aquarium for when I want to do nothing but sit back, relax, and get my mind off things.

AS Ron J put it....

Nicely put Ron.

I though the shop was the getaway.

Get some folding chairs for when the guys come over to help clean the frig. and put the TV on the wall. This way you still have the entire floor when you want it.

Tom, me and the boys outnumber the girls three ta two,

But bout every 28 days we bail to the shop ( a converted den ) and become one with the tools
