I bought a new quart of clear just for finishing the boat. Had a little less than 1/2 quart left of old clear & was fearful it would not be enough. For some reason this clear appears to have some contaminants in it as the finish is full of tiny pinholes & it did not "flash off" properly. I mixed up a batch of the old clear using the same catalyst & reducer & it shot fine. I just laid down a heavier coat on top of the first coat hoping I can get them to chemically "morph" ...........

Well the "morphing" kinda worked. I have the hull under the heat lamps & tomorrow I will wet sand & shoot another coat of clear. The cowl is the worst but I'm not giving up yet. This sure does bite the big one though. :(

PPG Concept 2021. I've never had problems before with 2021 but it just goes to show there are no guarantees no matter who's stuff you shoot.

I feel your pain. I'm still waiting for the epoxy (old stuff) I sealed my sponsons with last week to cure. Hate'n life with ya buddy :( :( <_<

This level of pain is extra nasty. $250 worth of graphics, $400 worth of paint & many months of bustin' a$$ reside under that bad batch of clear.

Damn! Hope the stuff cures up. I'd give it a good 24 hours before I would touch it again. Hope the best for ya.

Heh Don:

Thats a terrific and informative build up set of pics. I am going to print that whole series and reference that on my Fritz (Atlas) project although seeing how much work building a scale boat is, makes me wonder if I want to do it.. Thanks Tony J

Hey T glad it will help. I've gotten quite a number of e-mails & p/m's from those who've been able to benefit from this so it was definitely worth posting. One thing for sure with your Fritz hull is you won't be doing as many "corrections" so your build time so be alot less. :p

I have been there myself with a Close Call boat (Bad Catalist in the Clear) and it is no fun at ALL .(Sorry to see that happen Don) I was not able to sand mine out (Had to Stripe it all back off 50 hours of work and $300.00 later in paint) :( :( :( :( :( :(

Hi guys!

I painted cars using mostly catylized acrylic enamel in the 80's. With catylized enamel, pin holes or "fish eyes" are caused by silicone contamination. It didn't take much........... even wiping down the project before painting with a used or even laundered rag could do it. sometimes the final cleaning solvent was contaminated.

There are(were) several brands of fish eye retarder or anti pinhole juice on the market. a squirt or two in your gun ready mix will prevent the "fish eye" effect. It's been my experiance that it was shop conditions or contaminition during prep that was at fault, not the paint/clearcoat. Your paint dealer will prob'ly be interested in any problem you are having..............

I'm not sure how the fish eye retarder stuff works with todays finishes, but you might ask your paint supplier.

Don, looked at your pics............. lots of time and careful work is evident, looks great!!!

More than my 2 cents,

Bob the Fool

They were very interested, especially when the re-shoot with older can of same clear yielded no problems. A test shoot of the newer can on a similarly prepped test surface gave the same negative results so the clear was the issue. Unfortunately paint manufacturers give no guarantees on end results. The good part is I was able to save it, albeit with some seriously a$$ bustin' work. I'm assembling boat for testing tomorrow as we speak & I'll post pics to the gallery later. B)
