Don't worry about it, the soon to be x is working on that for ya- yeah, I have an attitude right now. Sorry ...

I'm out. See ya guys.

I don't see the big deal. I have seen numerous people lose radio and do the same thing.
Years ago a guy had a couple that looked similar to the one on EBay. At first I thought, "you really need a life" and then he told me they ran 100mph. I think I met him at the Greenbriar, Maryland race if anybody can refresh my memory. Cool old stuff anyway.
  Funny stuff Preston. I think Don Sparr dad used to run tether boats, I remember one year he brought all his stuff to Greenbrier to exhibit. Pretty cool stuff, when you think what they had too work with back in the day. B) B)
Ray;

Do you remember Ed Kalfus? He was into tether boats and held many records. He later got into RC boats and build his own engines and made his own props. He was up in age at that time. He used to run in district 1.

WOW! they ARE really fast!

Iguess if you don't have to worry about control, you can speed all your time and effort on speed.

Did you notice that the boats run through the smooth water left in their wake from the last pass? Don't have to worry about rough water!

Did you notice that the tether gets stretched longer and longer on the first few laps as the boat gets up to speed? (This is especially noticable on the tether car vids.)

HUGE potential liability if one of those things gets loose from the pole. It could travel a long way in the air!

Insane (read here "little to none") safety practices by the guys starting & launching the boats! Yeah, I'm going to stand behind a plastic orange net with that thing wizzing by at over 100MPH and think that it will protect me!

None the less they are very impressive with respect to speed but, I think I would get bored with this pretty fast.

1.) No one-on-one racing interaction.

2.) NO driver interaction with the boat or the course.

3.) No race strategy development or execution.

I don't think this is for me.

Somewhere in my house I have some old issues of flying models magazines that got into the history of tether boat racing and some of the premier names in the hobby....Ed Kalfus was one of em......many of these craftsman not only built thier own hulls but they built thier own engines!!! And we think were something special!!! I believe Mr. Kalfus was a machinist by vocation and he did move on to rc... he did pass away some years ago....Ill bet hes got an ear to ear grin on his face watchin some of the crazy stuff were doin with our toys today!!

There are RACERS and there are MECHANICS!!

In this day of radio control there are still a few guys that like control-line speed, teathered cars & boats.

It's the process of man against the laws of physics that some find so challenging.

The one net I saw looked like heavy duty belting, not cheap plastic contruction barrier fencing.

BTW- Radios are not 100% fail safe. ;)

Hi from the UK, Look up Onthewire web site more info on tether boats,And all of the records. The uk naviga class hydros A1,A2,A3 waterscrew class all have to use what we call straight fuel. Which is 80% methanol and 20% caster (no nitro allowed). One lap is 100 metres, approx 110yds, Boat is timed over 5 laps=500 metres after indicating when you want the timing to start. Propellers for most of the Naviga class boats are all home made in one piece cut out of high tensile steel bar,(lots of cutting, machining and filing).

pitch diam mph

A1 3.5cc 5.5" x 1.8" = 120

A2 7.5cc 6.25" x 2" = 129

A3 10cc 7" x 2.4" = 135

These are the current UK records. Best regards Martin.

Martin,

Doesn't Simon Higgins from "The Prop Shop" carry a few tether propellers?

We run custom ones on our S.A.W. boats here in the states.

Thanks,

Mark Sholund

Props-4-U

Simon from Propshop does indeed offer some nice props that some use, These ones he casts in stainless steel for us. Most of the Propshop props are used in the novice class boats. Bronze props just bend the blades back, Stainless are better but on the quick boats they still bend or break. Take for example the 3.5cc props that i make, Across the root of the blade their only 5.5mm wide and 2mm thick at the thickest point at the trailing edge down at the root. As you know if you make props to these sizes in castings even in stainless they will break very easy. Over the last 30-40 years we have used every metheod their is,forgings, castings, fabricated. The high tensile steel from solid is definately the best way, But yes a lot of hard work. As your probably aware every now and then you make an outstanding prop that will break records and several that wont match that one even though you make them all in the same way and they all check out the same on the gauge, Thats all ways the one that you end up breaking after a lot of use.Even in high tensile steel they fatigue with time and use. As i mentioned we are only aloud to use methanol and oil, No nitro. We also have strict rules on noise levels maximum 80db. We also us a plug a run even if the plug still glows,Not worth chancing a plug element going down through the engine on a second run Also on methanol and oil fuel it is more difficult to get the boat away on a plug thats been used before. Piston and liner fit is paramount using straight fuel, We use a lot of piston and liners.

Best regards Martin
